Cubase 5
Cubase 5
Details of Cubase 5 have now been published on the Steinberg website. Not sure what to make of the new features yet - let's just hope it's fairly stable.
Wonder if SOS have already reviewed it for the next issue?

There's a studio 4 crack I believe, so not quite!

Mostly Retired from Audio.... If I already know you I'll help, if not.... Ask Hugh Robjohns, unless that is you're in need of 80's shred guitar... that, I'm still interested in having fun with...

I've been running Cubase 4 in three studios. Not a single crash. Not one. From the first installation to now.
YMMV!

There's the new things:
http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/musicproduction/cubase5_product/cubase5_newfeatures.html
Quite interesting. Seems several of the stand out things that people would have covered to some extent in separate plug ins are now integrated - melodyne type pitch correction/shifting (that's a trump on Logic), drum sampler (interestingly with MPC integration), convolution reverb.
The beat mangling features seem quite intriguing and things I don't have available.
Full continuance with the Mac version too.
I see the Cubase forum has a 5 section already.

Any word on a release date? I wonder if they'll wait for Windows 7 to be released first? Theres no point prioritising Vista at this stage surely.
I have been wondering about an upgrade to the full version (I'm using SX3) so I might be able to get version 4 at a knock-down price! Hopefully!

The consensus on the Cubase forum, and those that say so who seem to have it on good authority, that it will be end of January for release in the USA and Germany. From past experience one would expect it a bit later in the UK.
There are Vista specific improvements in 5. - Windows 7 is still a long time away, there is every chance it will be Cubase 6 at least by the time that comes out.
Re: Cubase 5
First impressions:
Beats. Grooves. Dancey, dancey, blah, blah... Yawn...
Strewth! For Vari-Audio read 'Melodyne' - I hope Steinberg paid Celemony a license fee!
Automation. Hard to tell. I rarely use the automation, preferring to use more tracks, or draw volume curves in manually. This might be better, but I'm dubious.
A convolution reverb - at last! Looks lovely.
VST expression - interesting. But may be clumsy and overly reliant on Steinberg's own Halion libaries.
Tempo and time - always been a weak point of Cubase. This looks a massive improvement.
Media Bay - it hasn't gone away. Shame.
Vista 64-bit support. Great. When is Windows 7 on the shelf?
WASAPI support. Could be good if everyone gets behind it.

Re: Cubase 5
it's interesting.they've obviously liked the beat mangling stuff in sonar 8 a lot. the pitch correction stuff sounds interesting, but looks VERY like melodyne. and then there's a bunch of demo software. a convolution 'verb. at last. i suspect it'll be a good release, let's see what the price is given logic and sonar are £300 ish on the street with a LOT of extra content...and PT8 is just out. someone told me the upgrade price from cubase 4 to 5 is €199 - pretty expensive...

mhaigh wrote: the pitch correction stuff sounds interesting, but looks VERY like melodyne
Not a but if you don't have Melodyne or the like, but not so exciting if you do, but even so quite nice that you can just open an audio part and do that kind of thing.
I see that Antares have partnered up with UAD.
Re: Cubase 5
Right, does is sound better than version 3? Nope
Do the inbuilt synths and plug-ins come anywhere near the likes of UAD, Superior drummer and Melodyne? Probably not..
Is it still using a ridiculous amount of CPU cycles to keep asking whether it's a legitimate version...probably..
Ergo, if you already own Cubase 3 , or later, absolutely no point in buying it unless its 1000% guaranteed, far more stable..
My personal opinion, within 3-5 years Cubase will only be *fully functional* when working in cahoots with Yamaha hardware..

Amazon has full Logic Studio 8 for £253.
Precisely and you've got to wonder how many of these additional features we really need. Seems a lot of money especially with these exchange rates.
The core Cubase changes are no doubt useful, but stuff like additional drum instruments are only useful for people who haven't already shelled out for one of the numerous 3rd party apps already.

I'm not going to say too much. However, let me just say that, Logic 8 has been cracked and over the next year you are going to see it working on an increasing number of PCs and studios are going to be asked, "Is your PC able to run a certain OS"...
Re: Cubase 5
Perhaps they will drop the price and the dongle to compete with Logic?
Then again, perhaps they will release a buggy overpriced piece of crap with shareware-quality effects and instruments and then expect people to wait 18 months for some of the bugs to be fixed before abandoning it for an expensive new version with fresh bugs, while at the same time dropping support for any associated Steinberg hardware.

Re: Cubase 5
I'm an audio guy, so all the beat mangling, drum machine/sequencing stuff is meaningless to me.
I have been using Melodyne for several years now, so the pitch correction will not help me.
I've got some great reverbs, including Waves IR-1 convolution reverb, so the new Steinberg reverb is not really exciting to me.
No midi, so the new score enhancements don't excite me.
The tempo track does not help me (an audio guy, remember?)
Maybe the new automation.
I was really hoping for something similar to PT's Elastic Audio, which it does not look like was added, but you never know, there might be some enhancements to the Audio Warp feature that I did not hear about.
Overall, it is a big yawn to me... I will probably pass.
Maybe it is finally time to move to PT?

Re: Cubase 5
So .... v5 huh ....
Convolution reverb? Been available free for years...
64bit support? Sure thing mate, as long as you're on Windows - Mac? Nah .. a 'later release' ... which is funny as that was what was said during the v4 lifecycle.
Autotune? Erm .... well ... catch-y up-y I suppose..
Melodyne-a-like? Mono version which is a bugger as Melodyne is about to go poly...
Cool, crayon inspired graphics for 'beat creators' are presumably to impress those who find the drum editor too much like real thinking .... or maybe Steiny can't be bothered to put some development effort in there (as it's sooooo old ... )
And the price? two hundred squids to you chief! ... chief? ... chief? ..... oh bugger - time to dial 999 again.....
For more 'new' code - and presumably a whole new slew of 'features'. As I've got a stable 4.5 system running, why should I even consider this release?
I'd be laughing almost as hard as Max if it wasn't so tragic. Just goes to show that Steiny haven't just lost the plot, they've given up looking for it as well....

Veni, Vidi, Aesculi (I came, I saw, I conkered)
Re: Cubase 5
Sorry - I take it all back. I missed the bit about new Halion One content covering :
Obviously that justifies the whole shebang!! I mean .. it's not like I have a dozen different versions of that stuff on other synths already or anything ...
Acoustic Bass, Electric Bass, Fretless Bass, Pick Bass, Nylon Guitar, Steel Guitar, Clean Guitar, Distortion Guitars 1&2, Solid Guitar, Tenor Sax, Solo Trumpet, Brass Section and Large String Section.

i was thinking a couple of weeks back that Steinberg should get a license from Celemony and fully integrate the new DNA stuff into C5... shame they didn't pick up my telepathic communications!
i never got around to upgrading to C4, so this could be good for me. mind you, i'd still probably want a full, "proper" version of Melodyne for the polyphonic and time editing.
overall, much like the recent C4 patch - one or two good things, and an overwhelmingly large amount of things nobody appears to have asked for or seemingly has any desire to use.
