Different Outputs for Different Tracks

Post by Jesuslizardjr »

Hi im wondering if its possible to have (for example) two tracks in the same project but have each track go to a different output?

In this case i have a DI bass and a DI guitar, id like to route them to their own amps respectively and have them play simultaneously when the track starts but with each track coming from their own amp.

Im using logic on mac and have an Allen & Heath Zed R16 16ch mixer/interface.

Any help appreciated- I am new to this.

This is certainly possible. I would strongly urge you to download the manual for the mixer and spend a few days going through it, trying out all the different settings. On page 12 it shows a block diagram and from this I would suggest that you send your DI signals to a couple of unused input channels, select "Digital Return Pre Insert" and take the signal from the insert socket. Alternatively, if you need more control over the level, send the signal to an aux bus and take the output from the relevant aux output.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Yes it should be possible but there are a few things to consider, and I'm not familiar with either Logic or the Zed R16. To make it work you would need to route each track to it's own physical output on the desk separate from the main mix, the R16 has the "studio out" 1 and 2 so as long as the returns from Logic can be routed to those outputs they would be my choice. You would also need a re-amp device each to present suitable impedance and signal strength to the guitar amps (though it would work without the line level outputs would be too hot for a typical guitar amp input).

Hopefully somebody who knows Logic and/or the R16 will be along soon to fill in the gaps (and possibly tell me I'm wrong  )

Thanks for this, I haven't looked into the manual as im literally just using the thing as a cheap 16 input interface rather than as a mixer, all mixing etc is done in the DAW.

This issue with sending the tracks to the inputs is that they're all spoken for, so I was hoping for a solution that wouldn't require removing xlrs as the recording environment is set up.

It has 4 outputs (2x L & R) I wouldn't need control over the level as I will be setting that on the amps in the live environment (essentially re-amping but to play along to) so I would need to send each track to a separate aux bus, and link one to output 1 and one to output 2?

Thanks for this I assume there's a way to do that in logic on the individual track? Rather than the full project? It's not something I've ever looked into either!
