Interesting keyboard for live use?

Post by MarkOne »

Eagle eyed among you have probably noticed my various threads in the past about the pains of getting my keyboard rig to gigs in a small 2 seater convertible. So I was interested to see this YouTube landed in my suggestions this morning:

https://youtu.be/-YI6Zk6qUYY

And here's a link to their website

(There is an 88 note version, though despite the thumbnail he's reviewing the 73 note version.)

It's a little expensive, but I really can see this in a very portable rig, particularly for open mics and the like.

Not weighted, but like the guy said, sometimes portability is the more important thing.

As it comes in all those pieces, it must have a powerful saw wave.

Reliably fallible.

Hmm. If regularly disassembling it I'd be a bit concerned about wear & tear and muck getting into the open ends of the sections over time. For live use I'd be a bit worried about its robustness too, though that could be just because I tended to get quite energetic during a gig!

OK for the occasional gentle outing perhaps, but not a gear selection I'd make myself. That said, if it solves the problem of space in the car and getting a larger car isn't practical then I can see it being an option.

I was thinking a very sharp edge variable mark/space square wave.

I really don't see how they can justify that price. Portability seems to be the only thing it has going for it, and that feature / system doesn't look that expensive to me.

According to a 2019 review you could make a 96-key keyboard out of it. But this is not mentioned on the current website, so I suppose there wasn't too much demand for that. I could make use of it, but unless you're playing on large stages other band members would complain.

An ingenious solution if you want to pack a keyboard into a standard carry on bag for travel. I would personally 3d print some end caps to protect things though you could get some fabric bags I guess and the manufacturer would do themselves a favour offering matching soft bags I think. I'm not quite sure how the bits clip together so not sure how rigid the assembled keyboard is.

The 73 note version seems the most practical. In my experience you don't normally need a full 88 note keyboard except for classical music but 61 notes is slightly limiting, mostly at the bass end if you're working off sheet music e.g jazz and you have to do some lightning octave transposition or miss out the odd note in that scenario.

I don't think the price is silly if the units are well made. There is very definitely a market for something like this.

I've done one gig in my 2 seater convertible, and that was with an 88 note mother keyboard, and a laptop.
I tucked the keyboard into the passenger footwell, with the other end resting on the top of the seat, no problems, it wasn’t an issue.

I’ve done every gig for the past two years with my 2 seat SLK. With an Arturia Keylab 88 in its gig bag in the passenger seat and footwell a Novation Impulse and an Alesis keytar in a gig bag in the boot with a 2 tier Stay stand, along with a pedal board and. Zoom L20R and all my cables and my in ear rig in a gig bag.

Ok unless a, my wife wants to come, and b, it’s not chucking it down, because I have to put the roof down to get the Arturia in.

So the idea of a good folding keyboard is highly attractive.

How about a new car? a saloon maybe? I can recommend a nice BMW M3 or M5, all the performance of the SLK and more, but with extra space!
