Anyone using ultra wide monitor ?

Just wondered if anybody out there is using an ultra wide monitor for their music productions.

If so what have been your experiences so far ? Did you go for curved or flat ? Do you think there’s much difference ?

I have recently been thinking about going for a dual monitor set up and adding an ultra wide monitor to my existing 1920 x 1080 monitor but the more I’m thinking about it, the more I’m inclined to just go bigger than I originally intended with an ultra wide and just having the one ultra wide panel Does that sound like a sensible idea ?

I have noticed that there is quite a jump in price from the 34 inch models upwards I was thinking perhaps 38 inch or 40 inch as the 45 and 49 inch seems overkill.

Would really appreciate any feedback that might help me come to a decision.

I've found it more cost effective to use a couple flat screen TVs rather than one large monitor. YMMV

I’ve used the LG ultrawide for years as my main monitor, the flat one. I have disconnected my 2nd smaller monitor as I don’t need to look at videos full size on it for now.
Love the ultrawide.
The slight downside is more mouse arm movement to get from screen side to screen side. I keep an eye on that because of previous carpal tunnel issues. I can change the mouse rate of travel but then finer mouse movements are affected.

LG have their OnScreen Control software which can divide a screen up into various areas. It might also be a good time to mention multiple desktops, too, since we're talking about monitor efficiency. You may find those facilities useful.

Windows has something called fancy zones, w high does the same thing, which gives lots of options

Edit : I've just purchased a 32inch 4K 2160 LG screen monitor from a well known auction site 2nd hand used, to collect this Saturday. If you could hold on at all I might be able to respond to your some of queries after this Saturday.

One thing is how close to your screen monitor do you sit. I sit approx 2ft away. From approx 2ft away on my 4K imac I can read the small values on plugins. At 4K 2160 I can fit more on its screen than at 1440.
If you can read clearly the small values on plugins from 2ft away at 4K, then on a 32inch 4K 2160 screen you'd fit more on the screen than on a 34inch 1440 screen, than on a 40 inch 1440 screen. 4k 2160 would also be sharper than 1440.

34inch 38inch 43inch ultra wide monitors typically have a vertical resolution of 1440 which allows a certain amount of plugins to be fitted vertically.
A 32inch 4K screen has a vertical resolution of 2160 which allows more plugins to be fitted vertically but these plugins will be smaller in size on a 4K 2160 compared to a 1440 screen.
It can make it difficult to read the smaller size of plugins on a 4K 2160 screen even though it is sharper than a 1440 screen.
I can read smaller sized plugins on a 4K 2160 screen from approx 2ft away, I sit approx 2ft away from my 4K 2160 21inch imac screen.

A 32 inch 4K 2160 monitor has horizontal resolution of 3840 which is same as horizontal resolution of a 38 inch 1440 monitor. So they both fit the same amount horizontally.

I've just purchased a 32inch 4K 2160 LG screen used 2nd hand collecting this saturday. I will be able to post some pictures comparing how much plugins can be fitted at 2160 vs 1440 on this 32inch screen also the sizes of the plugins.

I'm using a 34" ultra-wide at the studio and at home. The studio one is flat, and the one here is curved, but only because the spec I wanted happened to come like that. In honesty, from where I sit it just looks flat, but I don't know if that's just my eyes getting used to it. I wouldn't want to go back to a 16:9 screen now, I really like the extra space.

That'll come down to preference, really. I tried using a single screen at the studio, but no matter how big that one screen is, I just prefer working with multiple monitors and switching windows less.

The home display runs at 3440x1440 and is roughly an arm's length from me, and the studio one is 2560x1080, but at nearly double the distance to keep it well behind my monitors to avoid reflections as much as possible. I don't personally struggle with text size on either with standard scaling settings.

Ultrawides are alluring I'm allured by them. I've wanted to get an untrawide every now and then.

After this thread and the ultrawide thread on windows forum, looking a little closer at resolutions :
a 1440 vertical resolution 34" 3440 horizontally, 38" 3840 horizontally ultrawide would display same amount or less horizontally than a 12" 4K laptop which is 3840 horizontally.
Any 1440 vertical ultrawide even if it's 49" wide would display less vertically than a 12" 4K laptop which is 2160 vertically.

A 45" 49" ultrawide 5120 horizontally will give a lot more space horizontally, yet they are rather expensive.

If we are upgrading from a 27" screen, 55" tv that is 1920 horizontally or 2560 horizontally then going to 34" ultrawide 3440 horizontally, 38" ultrawide 3840 horizontally does have quite a bit more horizontal space to fit windows, apps, plugins in comparison.

I would suggest a 4K 43" 55" digital signage display monitor used 2nd hand. They are approx £350 used 2nd hand cheaper than 38" ultrawide.
Will give 3840 horizontal space same as a 38" ultrawide that is 1440 vertical, and 4K digital signage monitor 2160 vertical will give more vertical space than any ultrawide that is 1440 vertical.
Then can place 43" 55" 4K digital signage monitor further away, sitting further back from it.
At 43" 55" the 4K the digital signage monitor will be easier to read plugins tracks further away as they will appear larger on a larger screen, will be shaper at 4K than ultrawide that's 1440 vertical.
Digital signage monitors don't usually have stands so would need to mount it some way.

The 32inch LG 4K 3840*2160 monitor I'm collecting I will place approx 2ft away from me, as I don't record mix on speakers, just checking mix on speakers.
I don't really need it as I'm content with my laptop.
I kind of got it because of this thread and the ultrawide thread on windows forum. Am considering requesting seller to cancel purchase not sure.

Screen I wouldn't mind getting is this Pantone validated 43 inch 4K BenQ SL4302K digital signage display monitor. It's more colour accurate due to Pantone validation.

I've got a 34" 1440 x 3440 and it's basically the same as the two 19" 4/3 monitors I had before but without the bevel down the middle and a smaller normal font size. If you went up to a 49" that's going to feel like three 19" jobs.
Mine is a flat screen, but if I went any wider I'd definitely go curved.

I got myself an ultrawide after years of thinking about it, and its brilliant. I used two largish monitors for years (plus a big flatscreen TV higher up to put the film Im working on), and at one point even doubted an ultra wide because it seemed it would reduce overall screen space because its like one and a half monitors rather than 2.

totally wrong.

what I didnt stop to think is that like a third or a quarter of your DAW screen on the left is used to show tracks and inspectors etc. Once you open your main window in logic on the ultra wide, the track / inspector area is the same, but the working area for editing audio / midi is suddenly HUGE. and this is where I spend most of my time.

on large, complex sessions for a film, its brilliant.

I got a fairly cheap, very minimal-looking Samsung LS34J552WQRXEN, connected by USBC to HDMI and have it floating on an arm off the front wall, which allows me to tip it back, up, lower for mixing, raising when my neck hurts etc. very happy and looks great.

My 14" screen 4K 3840*2160 Asus laptop displays more than a 34" ultrawide screen 3440*1400 : both horizontally and vertically.
My 14" screen 4K 3840*2160 Asus laptop displays same horizontally, more vertically than a 38" ultrawide 3840*1600.
38" I wouldn't be loosing as much as 34", especially vertically on a 34" there be quite less tracks vertically compared to my 14" 4K laptop which would bovver me.
38" is the better choice than 34", yet quite steep in price.

So a 4K 3840*2160 43" digital signage display monitor used 2nd hand with at least 500 cd/m² brightness and at least 1200:1 contrast ratio.
A 4K 3840*2160 42" tv £150-£180 used 2nd hand with warranty would do depending on its brightness and contrast ratio, butt I don't want a tv.
