Exquis - hex-layout isomorphic MPE midi controller

Post by clarinette »

Intuitive Instrument, the makers of the dualo du-touch, are back on kickstarter with their new midi controller: the exquis. It got 100% funded within in under a week.

It's vaguely being discussed on a post regarding isomorphism, but I think it deserves a dedicated post.

I myself, am an enthusiastic dualo owner. It's a full blown music instrument. I'm a song writer and music teacher. I use my dualo to compose and teach music theory to total beginners, advances musicians and music teachers alike and everybody is amazed. "Why didn't anyone tell me music theory was so simple?"

I can't wait for the exquis to come out, the pedagogical capabilities are amazing, we're confident it's going to propel our music teaching to the nest level.

That was rib tickling.

Been considering this since first saw it.
Thing I like is that it lights up whichever scale, deadens the others pads, so can't play a bum note.
Has MPE.
And ofcourse it doesn't have Piano keys.
I'm always drawn to playing Synthy stuff that doesn't involve Piano keys.

The folk over the Channel at Intuitive Instruments have been helping Santa out with some early deliveries...

They just finished shipping the Exquis preorders from the Kickstarter. My red aluminium version turned up this morning, and it's a beaut. :D

I got an email from UPS on Tuesday the 12th saying that I had a package coming that would be delivered on Saturday the 16th. No package has been delivered, and the tracking number provided from UPS shows only "Label created." There was a big storm here over the weekend, so... :x ...still waiting.

I just received this email from Intuitive Instruments:

Hello Everyone,

I'm writing to update you on the two pallets we shipped from France last Friday. Unfortunately, they did not arrive at our American distributor this Wednesday morning, as was anticipated just a few hours ago. We received a notification stating delivery would occur "by the end of the day," but it seems unlikely that our carrier will fulfill this promise.

It's late at night here in France, and we need to wait for sunrise to contact our carrier for updates. We sincerely apologize for this delay, especially since we did everything possible to ensure your deliveries before Christmas.

As a reminder, your packages within the pallets are all ready to be handled by UPS for earliest possible delivery.

We will continue to keep you informed as soon as we have more information to share.

Best regards,

The Intuitive Instruments Team

...and then today I get this:

"About an hour ago, we received confirmation that the two pallets have safely landed in America and customs already cleared them. They are now en route to our US distributor's offices. UPS will be picking up your Exquis on Tuesday, December 26 and and will start dispatching them."

Even though I mostly noodle on Keyboards I play far more bum notes on Keyboards than on Guitar. I suppose because the frets are wider spaced on a Guitar also because the narrow strings spacings just fits my smallish fingers.
Exquis should prevent me from playing bum notes.
Also for some weirrrdd reason I find the alternating black and white up down keys confusing at times whereas the uniform colour unform depth of the fret makes it less confusing for me.
Exquis should help me not get confused at times.
Playing rhythmically keeping a rhythm is far easier for me on Guitar especially as I'm mostly a thumb player Wes Montgomery inspired it's far easier for me to keep rhythm with my thumb.
On Keyboards I find it harder to keep a steady rhythm.
Exquis should help me to keep a better rhythm.
Also I'm forever bending notes the wrong way on a Keyboard, on Guitar doesn't happen.
Exquis should help me bend notes better.

I shall save up. I could have saved up this past year butt other things were necessary.

So UPS picked it up on Tuesday in Wisconsin, and estimated mine would be delivered on Saturday. :-| Thursday, Nashville, new ETA, Friday. :) Friday, "Your package cannot be delivered to a P.O. box." ...and I'm just informed of this on the date of delivery? :x Why did their system even allow the creation of the label?!? :wtf: A good, long, frustrating phone call later, :round1: and I'm told I can pick it up from their distribution warehouse, only about 15-20 minutes away from here. I have my Exquis! YAY!! :D ...OK, I've got things to do now.

I think frustrating and poorly designed delivery processes must be about as close as we come to some kind of international constant...

But you now have your new toy. Sorry, tool. ;)

I'm enjoying this a lot. The software is only at v1 and they're already working on the next release, but by the time they've ironed out a couple of minor issues this is going to be an excellent addition to my open-mic toolbag. :D

Tis excellent news.

I had looked at Joué J-Play : multiple swapable controller pads for Audio, Guitar Bowed Plucked instruments, Keys, Percussion, Piano on one board.
Butt users have left reviews on Joue website, on amazon on utube saying it has issues glitches bugs.
Preehaps if they release a mk2 would have ironed these ooot.

Tool? toy? :thumbup::thumbup:

I'll be interested to see how well the keys hold up to a little time / use. The software / firmware is missing some of the flexibility that was supposed to be there in v1.0. Also, I had trouble with the supplied USB cable, the driver didn't install until I used another. After the driver loaded, the supplied cable seems to work well enough. Still, I ordered a new cable (longer, and from a reliable brand IME).

If the HW lasts, and the SW gets sorted, I'd actually like to get a second one for a little portable setup. It is pretty cool. :D
