De-essing - good reference tracks?

For everything after the recording stage: hardware/software and how you use it.

Pretty certain that's the same thing with a different number. :thumbup:

I do have a ribbon that I was going to add to my test list this weekend.

My typical starting point is Waves Sibilance but sometimes I'll use TDR Nova (dynamic EQ) with just a single band operating in the problem area.
Just to iterate, the problem I have is being able to judge that too much / too little when I'm in the mix and the constant back and forth after 24 hours is such a time suck. So hence my thinking that a couple of good sibilance-specific references might help me get to that point faster and with fewer iterations.

That's a very generous offer Sam, I will be in touch. :thumbup:

1. You asked about references. I recall Mike Senior mentioning in an article many moons ago that he used Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn' as a reference for de-essing —it's just a bit too sibilant so a good marker (if it's that bright, tame it a bit, if it isn't you're probably in safe territory).

I'm not sure good advice is ever really late? ;) Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add that.
I've also found Rest by Leif Vollenbeck sounds generally pretty to my ears so will be adding that.

2. You might find some useful technique tips in an article I wrote in SOS Sep 2020. In particular, the points about what you drink, blocking gaps in teeth and mic position.

::: opens in a new tab for a re-read :::

4. I'd echo what people have said about mics and processing. Also, not sure anyone's pointed out that ribbon mics naturally have resonances much lower than typical capacitor mics, putting them out of the wanted audible range...

See above about having a ribbon in my test set. :)

5. I'd bite Sam's hand off for that offer of auditioning mics if I were you...

Hand duly bitten! :D

I been hissing lol into my main ldc to listen ooot for metalness. I don't have a decent ribbon nor transformerless to compare. I lucked ooot by getting it after reading Paul's review in SoS magazine, suits my tenor warbling also acoustic instruments, has a nice bottom a full sound, I couldn't detect metalness could be my hearing though : Neat king bee mk1.
Next is to acquire a budget decent ribbon prolly Mxl R77 reviewed favourably by Paul in SoS magazine. Thereafter a budget transformerless multipattern ldc which will prolly be CAD M179 reviewed favourably by Hugh in SoS magazine. Then I could compare a bit more.
