Getting out of a rut
Chuck Sher has published 'The Practice Notebooks of Michael Brecker"
After a Christmas holiday of failing to do much of use, I finally started with it this morning. I spent about two hours on the patterns on a single page.
If you are looking for something to prompt you to wiggle your fingers in unfamiliar ways, and have your preconceptions challenged about what notes you can play over what harmony, here's a very good use of 20 dollars for the downloadable . pdf
Alright, it's not guitar technology exactly, but you could think of it as software.

Instant gratification is actually pretty good. It's fast as well.

I find that a good motivator is remembering that the only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.

That’s more worrying than motivating to me.
Re: Getting out of a rut
When I first started learning guitar in 1964 my grandma gave me this book published in 1911 that has some interesting chord forms. It does break me out of ruts still today.

Ego, rut? get rid of the ego, who we are, whats left?
I’m struggling with an impasse, in Gurdjieff right now, the battle of the ego is it a limitation that stops us from experiencing new things, or is it a protector of our individuality "who we are"

Please don't move or change things,
It would annoy me greatly.
You see, I'm in a rut,
But I rather like it.
It's quite a cosy rut,
I should know, I made it.
Peaceful too you'll note,
So please don't make any noise.
You may join me if you wish,
If first you wipe your feet.
My rut is clean and tidy,
And I intend to keep it that way.
It would annoy me greatly.

Appreciated Philbo. Downloaded I do like these yellowed pages in olde books. It's only 26 pages so relatively alright to get to grips with.

It's all just variations of five basic shapes. ...even easier to get to grips with.

Ego, rut? get rid of the ego, who we are, whats left?
What's left would be the id and the super-ego, according to Freud
Not a good combination, probably.
Odd that folks who go on about how "we" should let go of ego often choose to write books about how profound they are. Eckhart Tolle is another one.

That was a poignant view - Mitt was a member of Ruts DC:
"The beautiful ‘Born Innocent‘- has been played live many times, at their own performances, and on all 24 dates supporting The Stranglers on their UK winter tour 2022. The album version is haunting, enhanced with harmonica recorded by the late Mitt Gamon, who sadly lost his battle with cancer last May. Mitt had previously played and collaborated on Ruts DC’s 1982 album ‘Rhythm Collision Volume One’ and the band shared their respect and love for him:
“We are proud to have known you Mitt and so glad that, at least, you got to hear the “Mitt’s Immortal Mix” – a super dub of the ‘Born Innocent’ track on which your harmonica is nothing less than sublime. Thank you for sharing some of your last breath with us and the future”.

Ah. I didn't know that. I loved The Ruts. They captured the mood of those few years around the Broadwater Farm and Birmingham riots brilliantly. A very under sung outfit if you ask me. Easily as good as The Clash (ducks for cover).

At one point I'd read a bunch of ET. I didn't recall thinking he was blowing his own horn much ... I might go back and spot check to see if my perspective has changed.
Thanks, Secret Sam!

Re: Getting out of a rut
It's not always so easy to get a handle on :
we all every single person on ere foruume we are droplets from a Fountain.
This Fountain expresses Itself thru us the droplets if we allow It to be expressed.
Our brain our central nervous system are there to facilitate the Fountain to be expressed thru ourself.
Everytime we selflessly sincerely help someone with an audio query on ere foruume we are enabling the Fountain to be expressed thru ourself : without realising.
Everytime we selflessly express a virtue a creativity an invention a science a thought physically doing something making someone giggle anything benefitting others animals nature people we are enabling the Fountain to be expressed thru ourself : without realising.
Every person that touched our life in a beneficial way one way or another was allowing the Fountain to be expressed thru them self : without realising.
This includes musicians bands as The Ruts mentioned in this thread, Mitt Gamon mentioned by Martin.
This includes our dear loved still with us and departed, our doggies cats pets. Every one droplets from the Fountain.
::
We are meant to be the most of who we individually are, unique : so that we uniquely express the Fountain thru ourself.
We are not meant to be some knock oorrff of somebody else, not some clone of somebody else : no matter who they are.
It's not easy as too many events pressures health mental conditions can place significant barriers for ourself to express the Fountain.
Also our own sh*ttyness doesn't help.
Being sh*tty is who we are every person on ere foruume on earth : just that our expressing the Fountain without realising outweighs our sh*ttyness.
::
There are many of those millions upon millions that don't allow the Fountain to be expressed thru themself : thus they commit all sorts of things against animals and nature and humanity.
Then there are those for various mental reasons aren't able to expressly display the Fountain thru themselves.

Re: Getting out of a rut
As soon as you put yourself on a pedestal, give lectures, run courses, write books, you are assuming a position of superiority, and you’re also profiteering from something that is beyond money.
I've been listening intently to the talks given by J G Bennett, and I'm not absolutely convinced of his credibility.
Yes, he says some very interesting, thought provoking, and what seem to be logical, sensible things about how to improve our way forward as human beings, but sometimes my interpretation of what he says, is that he contradicts himself occasionally, and all the time it seems as though he’s avoiding defining the fundamentals of what he’s talking about.
Either it’s me failing to fully understand, which is more than likely, possible, or, there simply isn’t anything to understand. Sometimes we want to believe there’s something in the horses mouth, when it’s obvious there isn’t, and the only person it's not obvious to is ourselves.
But I’m still looking.

" ........."
I learn a lot from courses and books, and can even tolerate a fair amount of pedestal mounting in the process.
I never took Dylan's sentiment,
"In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach ..."
as a take down of teachers, just of mongrel dogs.
(Though nowadays I wonder if even that is too judgemental ... it's probably not the dogs' fault they're all mongrelly!

Knowledge is to be respected, and shared. But we are all human beings, and on that level, there are no differences IMO.

Pedestals are an occupational hazard that can't be avoided, maybe that’s a better way of putting it.
