Plastic socket set

Post by Arpangel »

I need something like a socket set for electronics use, I've seen some people use these plastic "keys" to remove the nuts from chassis mounted pot's, I need something like this as I’m working on something has a lot if pot's to remove.
They look like those plastic keys you use to bleed radiators but with a socket on the end.
I've scoured the net and I can"t find anything.

I have some, from a luthier supplier IIRC. I’ll see if I can remember where.

Though a normal socket set is just as useful. The plastic ones are just a bit kinder on delicate surfaces.

OK, look up ‘Rocket Sockets’.

I got mine from Fuzz Dog pedals but they are out of stock at the moment.

One alternative supplier:

An ordinary metal socket is usually fine they are polished and don't have sharp edges so shouldn't cause any damage if used with care and the torque on these nuts should be very low anyway.

I'd agree that metal sockets are probably fine as they are usually well polished with no sharp edges. One thing to watch is that pots will require deeper sockets than normal in order to accommodate the spindle.

Though as it’s Arpy, plastic tools are probably safer. Especially for others.

An ordinary spanner for that matter does the job.

Try 'RockBotton' & 'It's a Gift' type shops for a set of "Box Spanners".
You might have to smooth the ends with some fine Emery cloth. A buffing wheel does the job in seconds. Or Lekky tape.

Not yet looked on Zon.Will do.

Thanks a lot all, I find that pliers and stuff, spanners, can scratch front panels if you’re not careful, I'm definitely better off with plastic.

Pots of old had a crinkle washer or/and an anti-rotation lug at the back and a thin plain washer under the nut so scratching the panel was never a problem.

What sort of cheap tat are you buying Arp'?

I'll hazard a guess he's trying to get at the main circuit board of his Moog Grandmother synth to fix the reverb tank connections....

For reference here's the Fuzz Dog pedals link for the sockets.

That looks like the sort of thing that would be very 3D printable although you wouldn't be able to match the strength of glass reinforced nylon so the plastic would have to be thicker.

And here we go

(there may be others but they were the first I found)

Can pick up similar from children's toy tool sets yet they won't be as sturdy I reckon.

I put together one of Korg's kits and was worried about spanner slipage causing panel scratching.

I cut a suitable pot_sized_hole in a bit of paper and used that as a panel protector whilst carefully tightning/loosening pots.

I want that Korg oscilloscope, but I'm not sure my dexterity is up to it.

The long thin screws holding the sides to the corner frames are fiddly little buggers! Not difficult, but fiddly, and needing patience... or an assistant and a pair of tweezers! But the rest is trivially simple, easy and quick.
