EQ Plug-in's?

Discuss hardware/software tools and techniques involved in capturing sound, in the studio, live or on location.

Yeah, I'm generally using the SSL stuff since it got added to my slate sub for free.

I'm actually very close to just buying a couple of the SSL plugs individually and stopping the sub.

You do realise that those are the range of fundamental frequencies (the same for all instruments on those frequency range charts), and doesn’t include overtones/harmonics? A flute doesn’t have a lot of harmonics, but just enough to make it more interesting than a pure sine wave. Whilst it’s probably OK for the low notes, the upper octave will sound dull and probably just a sine wave if you cut off immediately after 2.1kHz. So I’d be looking at least a couple of octaves above that for a low-pass filter. So at least above 8.4kHz.

Reliably fallible.

Depending on the type of flute, there is also a certain amount of breath noise which will be broadly harmonically related but in multiples of the note frequency.

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.

I cut the particular Flute sample to 1.5kHz as even 2.1kHz was a bit too bright for my ears also a bit too bright for the tune : this is playing the sample in the mids. Playing higher up would mos def want to Pass higher on the filter else it would sound quite boxy.

How about IK Multimedia's MixBox? Over 70 modules including many EQs, on sale at $30 right now. Very good it is, too, and their licensing is very generous indeed. Probably the best plug-in bargain around right now.

I started with TDR Nova 5 years ago, as its a great free option imo. But if you wanna go deeper I suggest FabFilter Pro, which I use now, gives great dynamic processing controls, per-band spectral processing, analogue modelling, and a huge range of presets.

I'm not after saturation or anything like that.

That is any ITB EQ that exists really, even stock DAW should be fine. Often, most emulations have a form of saturation but you can normally leave it nominal or remove it entirely.

For channel strip, demo the PIA Brainworx BX Focusrite, I though the EQ was very nice, quite "pretty" if I recall correctly. I will tolerate channels strips I have a few but generally I am covered for my channel EQ's with Equlibrium and Pro- Q4 when making my own music. I will occasionally pull out the Sontec or a Neve-a-like every now and then.

I now realize you have probably got strip EQ resolved, given the poast was from 2024.

I'm using ReaEQ most of the time, don’t really need anything else.

Same here - although I also have the Re JS effects like ReEq

which might give you an alternative.
