SSL12 Interface Keeps Disconnecting
SSL12 Interface Keeps Disconnecting
A week ago I bought a new SSL12 audio interface, and although everything else seems to be working well, when I'm in my DAW and I record using a microphone with +48V phantom power, the SSL12 keeps disconnecting. I believe it has something to do with the +48V, but I have no idea what to do to fix it. Any help would be really appreciated!

Re: SSL12 Interface Keeps Disconnecting
Are you connecting it to a USB2 or a USB3 port on your computer? There is a cryptic comment on SSL's web page that implies that it uses USB2 for audio data but needs USB3 for power. If you are trying to use it with a USB2 port then you may not be giving it enough power.

Though the manual says “SSL 12’s power is based on the USB 3.0 specification (900mA) so ensure you are connected to a USB 3 port and not a USB 2 port.”
So SSL really need to tidy up their website.

Reliably fallible.

If you are on Windows you want to ensure that there aren’t any USB power saving modes in operation (this may also apply to
Macs but I’m a PC person so don’t know).

Re: SSL12 Interface Keeps Disconnecting
900mA is certainly pushing it, although the spec is 1A. The problem here is that most USB cables have pretty thin cores and the voltage drop at these sort of currents could start to be an issue. I would look at getting a USB cable which is intended for high power use - check out reviews etc. to find something reputable, and keep the cable as short as possible.
