My upstairs neighbor records what is in my apartment ... and I
My upstairs neighbor records what is in my apartment ... and I
I'm in Vermont. The law allows him to record so I want to know what I can do to do the same. This seems like a strange law to me but I have to counter it by doing the same . Of course within the law.
This guy is a registered sex offender and so he is a total A-hole.
What kind of microphones can I use to attach to my ceiling to record what sound is coming from his apartment. I want to find something that I can use as evidence to give to the police.
Any recommendations on what kind of microphones to get to do this.

Sorry, but a microphone is, almost certainly, not the right solution to your problem. Can you elaborate on how he's recording you (or how you know this)? Can you cite the law you're referring to? Have you spoken with the police (or any legal authorities)? I know this isn't the answer you want, again sorry, but I do wish to help, if I can. Welcome to the forum, btw.

Depending on the construction of the building, a cheap boundary mic (like you use for conferencing) or PZM attached to the ceiling with poster putty might be one way to go. But depending on what evidence you're hoping to record maybe just use your phone?

Why do bad things mostly seem to happen to people who light up a room when they enter it?
Re: My upstairs neighbor records what is in my apartment ... and I
You have my sympathy!
Sounds like a fun guy! So what was his offence?
As stated, a PZM.
Better still - ignore the MF or move! Life's too short to be worrying about weirdos who record what their neighbours are up to - and do not become one yourself!

When he's recording play the sound of police sirens and a cop shouting through a megaphone "Come out with your hands up and your troosers too"
Seriously, you really want to record this bloke? You need to get out more

This is an invasion of privacy, I'd find it extremely annoying.
Don’t record him, it's pointless, and will achieve nothing, why is he doing it? have you asked him?
I'd just go round and say to him, we can talk about this or we can fight about it, it's up to you. Not that I’m suggesting you do that, just stay cool, and don’t give him any ammunition to throw at you.

Don’t record him. It’s a waste of time and brings you down to his level. He is clearly a disturbed and dangerous individual.

What sort of things do you hope to capture?
Whilst recording the noise in your own apartment may be legal, do you know if what you capture can be used as direct evidence on which action can be taken if there is talk of illegal activity?
As it is recorded without their consent, in court it would probably be regarded as supporting circumstantial evidence and best, and a good lawyer may get it ruled out as inadmissible. You’d be better asking the DA’s office rather than the police on this (if they give out advice like this) otherwise you’d need advice from an appropriate private lawyer.
Given the likely low and muffled quality of the voice you'll record, you’ll probably struggle to prove the voice is this person’s. They could easily argue it was on the TV or radio (and it might well be).
You’ll have to sit through hours of recordings if background noise or mundane conversation if they don’t talk much or say anything untoward. You’ll also have to keep quiet as the noise you make will be louder than noise coming through the ceiling. So no music or TV for you when you’re in.
This could turn into an obsession, which won’t be good for your mental health.
I’m sorry you’re having these issues, but this is probably not the best way to deal with them.

Reliably fallible.

Given the number of times this topic comes up do you think there could be an announcement at the top of the forum: "Recording Your Neighbour (Spoiler: Don't)"?

This is in a different context to most of them though, which are about generally about recording loud music and shouting.
Reliably fallible.

The guy is asking how to go about it, not whether or not he should. He's not posted in the lounge.

Rather than a microphone on the ceiling, you may want to get a carpenter to attach a couple of these firmly to the beams in your ceiling, then play some EDM or house music through it.

Seriously, you could just play your favorite music through normal speakers at a conversational level during all waking hours and he would quickly get bored with the unintelligible recordings he would be getting.

Yep, at least whilst he's recording he's not shooting at anyone!

You often get posts like this, and there’s never a reply .

Sometimes people leave it a while before checking back. Other times they don't respond even if they've got information they asked for.
All new posts get approved before you see them and that process often involves more than simply reading the text.
In recent months there have been one or two regrettable occasions where a likely genuine poster has been put off because of speculative discussions in a topic they've started so if you have suspicions or concerns about a post then please put them into a report as opposed to a reply.
Thank you
