Need more outs. New interface or ADAT expansion?

However, as long as your computer can handle it, even at 48kHz when using a 16 sample buffer, you should be able to get a round trip latency of around 1.2ms, and 1.8ms with a 32 sample buffer (at least that's the reported latency on my Quantum 2626). Yes, you can get it under 1ms with 96kHz, but you can certainly live with slightly longer latencies if necessary.

A lot of people are happy if their interface operates at 4ms input latency (with a longer round-trip value).

Bumping this thread with a totally out there consideration.

I'm being offered a Grace Design m908 for an extremely discounted price.

That's still a huge jump over what I was originally considering spending.

I could potentially justify it if it's THAT good, if I could get a good 10 years use out of it, and if it can be used with perhaps less intended tasks like Reaper as my main DAW and playing back consumer media content like film and video games which support 7.1, 7.1.4, atmos etc playback.

Thoughts?

Pardon my ignorance, being but a rank amateur when it comes to professional audio but for that kind of money I'm thinking cripes why wouldn't I buy a decent digital mixer with a usb audio interface built in and feed everything from that. Compared to the old semi pro analogue mixers from years back, these modern digital mixers have pretty darned good preamps and a ton of I/O. But maybe I'm missing something and I learn a lot from these forums.

Hi Hugh, I had already checked these both before posting, but was still unsure if I should make the jump.

It's funny its just described as a 'monitor controller' when it is also a fully fledged audio interface, although I'm not sure if the one I'm being offered has any analogue inputs at all, so I'll need to check that as I am recording the odd thing (although I guess I can still use my old fireface UC as standalone for that).

I've dropped an email to Grace about multimedia support - one thing that is useful about the fireface is that it also appears as a regular 5.1 media output device to Windows, so i can just run a game on my machine and it outputs 5.1 audio. Whatever I replace it with will still need to be able to do this, and with higher channel counts (although any atmos content will likely throw a spanner into this whatever the device ).

Looks like I'll have the opportunity to try before I buy so may get to answer this myself.

Main thing is thinking is it THAT good, certainly the idea of a solution to a top end controller and a top end interface is extremely attractive, i just have to justify the cost! Knowing if Grace are reliable in offering long term driver support will help too.

Grace m908 worked first time with both games and my audio software without any additional configuration so f*** it I'm buying it.
