Dissertation Questionnaire Request

Post by bmoptics03 »

Hi everyone hope you're all well. I'm currently researching analogue to digital compression emulation for my dissertation. The research primarily consists of data transfers from analogue to digital spaces, particularly when manufacturers are remodelling non-linear outboard units.

As part of this, I'm hoping to gain some responses from people within the production and engineering fields about their experiences with compression emulations and their analogue counterparts.

If you have the time, it would be a great help towards my research if you could fill out this short questionnaire to help me collect information on how consumers interact with these devices and their opinions on modern compression emulations.

Thanks very much for reading, any feedback is highly valued.

Like Elf, I don't want to have to sign in to fill in a survey like this. If you want my personal information then I also need quite a bit more from you - like exactly which institution requires this data, what it will be used for and how it will be stored.

You have to sign in with a google account, the world's most ravenous data collector, I don't think so

There are lots of free online survey tools available. Happen you should include the issue of the reluctance of people to be part of a data mining exercise in your dissertation?

And perhaps it might surprise you that not everyone has a google account?

Hi there, apologies I think google turns that on automatically. I've turned it off now.

Best.

Hi there, I've removed the email collection now - I believe google does that automatically when creating the survey.

Hi James, apologies this was a mistake on my end. I think Google sets this feature as a standard when making a survey via their portal. The email requirements have now been removed.

I’m going to be a bit grumpy now.

When I did my dissertation recently I wouldn’t have got ethics approval (and therefore could not have passed) without a Participation Information Sheet, GDPR statement, risk assessment, participant consent form, and contact details for the institution and supervisor.

Sounds a bit over the top right? Maybe, but if people are going to spend time on it for me, the least I can do is tell them a bit about what I am going to do with the data, make sure they are happy with that and let them know who to contact in case of concerns?

On that basis, I’m out.

That's what I alluded to when I said that I needed more information about the survey. Other people who have asked for survey participants recently in this forum have provided this information, as have other surveys elsewhere that I have participated in.

To the OP:
All the 'free' online survey tools have privacy issues - after all, there really is no 'free lunch' and the companies make revenue from gathering metadata, personal data, etc. from the survey creators and the respondents. So, if you really want to get some responses here, stump up for a paid survey tool that promises a degree of anonymity - e.g Survey Monkey - and stay away from freebies from the evil empires of Meta and Alphabet. And spell out the particulars of your data collection and the privacy controls in place.

Ideally, there would be a simple screening procedure for the mods to look at before agreeing to post the request for forum members to participate in research. I think we all would like to help students who are undertaking research for their dissertations or theses, but certain minimum standards should be adhered to.

As a start, may I suggest:

Researcher name (Principal Investigator)
Names of any co-researchers
Institution
Title of research
Aim of research
Ethical approval granted
And documentary evidence for any of the above should be provided on request.

Hi Adrian,

This survey is a very small part of my dissertation. My main primary research sources are listening tests and interviews with studio technicians and plug-in designers.

I'm very sorry to hear you don't think I provided enough information surrounding what I will do with the data from my questionnaire. Noted. To clarify, the data from this survey will provide me with a small insight into how compression emulation products are received within their target market - although the majority of the subjective opinions within my research paper are from listening tests and interviews. This is because the largest part of my paper details how digital protocols are performing against inherently non-linear devices, much more of an objective approach.

As for your experience with your dissertation, I do not need to complete these tasks as this survey is not integral to the fundamentals of research. I have however had to create consent forms, contact details etc for my other forms of research.

Don't get grumpy Adrian, it's a post on a forum requesting survey participants, no one is forcing you to take part or even reply.

Best.
