Nord Wave 2 - Suitable for (kind of) newbie?

Post by Kosmische »

Hi everyone

I'm thinking about buying a Nord Wave 2 which I've found online at a considerable reduced price.

However, before I bite the bullet, I thought I should ask the experts here about how complex the synth is and whether it might be suitable for someone like me. I've dabbled a lot with plug-ins so do know a fair bit now about synths but I'm a long way away from being able to properly program.

What do folks here think?

Thanks as always for nay help you can give me.

You would have no trouble with it from a complexity point of view. Nords have their quirks, but RTFM and you'll be fine.

They sound pretty good, too. Just make sure that you *are* getting a decent deal, as I'd say that there are better options out there, price notwithstanding.

The synth player in my band has one. I've not had spent a lot of time with it but my understanding is that it works on two levels with the basic synth having a dedicated knobs and switches for all the functions and you only need to get into the menus for the more esoteric functions. It seems to have lots of very usable sounds out of the box.

I used to own a Nord lead which I believe is where the synth interface was derived from (it certainly looks very similar) and it is probably my all-time favourite hardware synth in terms of both user-friendliness and sounds. It was only sold because I got rid of all my hardware, in favour of the plug-in synths that came free with Logic. If I ever needed another hardware synth a Lead or Wave would be at the top of my list instruments to consider.

Thanks to both for your help but given what Elf said said about possibly other better competitors, can you tell me what the obvious competition might be?

Thanks again.

Quite a few hydrasynth users (I was one) are selling off the original 49 key version at keen prices to upgrade to the Deluxe. In terms of bang for the buck there is absolutely nothing to remotely compare with any of the HS range. The polyphonic after touch and ribbon are exceptional and the synth power is immense. They are also built like tanks, which is why you're seeing them in touring bands where reliability and flexibility are paramount.
(And yes, the Deluxe is truly lovely but obviously costs more. But sitting in front of six octaves of poly after touch and a six oscillator wavetable synth is an incomparable experience.)

In the past decade the only out and out hardware Synth I purrchased Arturia Microfreak. Even though I've noodled on mebe 20-27 hardware Synths.

Hydrasynth Explorer is prolly one of the few I would purrchase : I just want to be able to take gear with me to various outdoors places.
I just want to hear from someone has Explorer and Deluxe how their polyAT compares.
