Back in time, time, time....1989 bedroom studio digitally recreated

I made a track that has the sound of a 1989 bedroom studio.

It's so bad it's good.. Youtube and blog write up of how I did it. Very casual and I let my hair down, with a cheese-tastic synth solo.

Listening now but I never listened to this style of thing thirty years ago so I fear I may not be your target market! :D
If I'd heard anything this well put together coming out of a bedroom studio back then though it definitely would have piqued my interest.

This is triffic.
Somewhere between Banco de Gaia, Global Communication and The Orb remix. Could easily be on one of their albuumes from the mid 90s.
I could easily hear this in a festival.

"My goal is looking to achieve a specific sound, not a volume level. In 1989, these times the full musical dynamics were intact."
I dig this. 80s, 90s early to mid are my references for Beatz EDM.
Main thing nowadays is does a mix hurt my ears.
This mix doesn't hurt my ears at all.

::

89 hmmm my family purrchased for the first thyme a Yammy pss680 home keyboard for me from Boots !!
On which I did covers of one or two JmJarre, Kraftwerk, New Order, OMD, Vangelis.

To really do it justice I listened on just one ear bud. Technically lovely - but much too modern for me I'm afraid.

Good work!

Drat and double drat ! LOL, too modern, sounds like big artists of a scene, not hurting ears = fail !

Only joking, glad you like it. An odd one to make really, messing things up intentionally, but lots of fun was had.

I understand! You are to sound engineering what Les Dawson was to the piano. We all stand on the shoulders of giants my friend

I'll have you know that was my best ever synth solo. In fact my first and only so far, and I made people wait for it. I even used the mod wheel, I felt all proper keyboardy. :)

Beatz EDM tune can be one of the trickier things to mix.

Mixing deep heevee stacked Kicks for Beatz EDM is one of the more difficult things I've mixed.
I'd recommend to anybody to help improve mixing skills by stacking deep heevee Kicks.

As it's not just bunging a beat on, not just sticking any Kick, any 808, any sample, nor opting for a thin Kick which is frequently used to cut thru a mix.
Instead requires matching different deep heevee Kicks, eq comp on each Kick, hearing how these deep heevee stacked Kicks sound in the tune, swapping out Kicks.

If we have any Acoustic instruments, samples of Acoustic instrument in the tune then it makes it more challenging as the deep heevee stacked Kicks can quite easily drown the Acoustic instrument.

If it resonates with a single person you have done an ok job.

The main thing is to do something that you connect with yourself somehow, typically a feeling, often something visual for myself, (and often something to do with the sky as it is always changing and a source of movement and awe.) and then make a little sonic story of your own. :)

Quite right. That's how I've always seen it myself. Even though some things aren't your particular genre - you can still appreciate them as pieces of work and admire the creativity that went into them. The numbers don't really matter, and if you get into that mind set - the numbers are quickly never enough on their own. How to cheapen a passion.

SASM's instrumental edm.
https://youtu.be/diJZHe3pp9c?si=LpY7VD13zcUVqg3k

I only had elcheapo £30 Superlux Evo Hd681 semiopen deejay headphones to complete mix my edm albuume in march. I don't have your PMC IB1S monitors nor treated room nor importantly your 23 years experience. May I got AKG K245 £20 semiopen phones : most surprising for the amount of Bass and importantly clarity of Bass.
I'm now using your edm instrumental SASM as reference to remix my edm albuume using K245 : keeping the Kicks Bass deep heeeveee as they were whilst the mix clearer than before.

Imo this is one of the harder things to mix : deep heeeveee Bass Kicks. In comparison I've mixed my pseudo Classical, Hard Rock, Electronica, Acoustic in a jiffy.
