Behringer has released their first VST plugin, 'Vintage'. Predictably, it's a vintage synth emulation, but not any specific vintage synth. It's also totally free (with a registration which is, at the moment, down).

https://plugins.musictribe.com/behringer/0723-AAD

Interface looks pretty good, appreciate the visual and numeric feedback that some 'vintage synth' emulations don't do. I assume this is the first part of their promised free DAW. Kind of a boring and well-trodden area to start off with but it looks fine and it's hard to fault for the price. Gotta have a vintage analog plugin in any DAW worth its' salt.

Hopefully the next plugin releases fairly soon and aims for some more interesting synthesis methods, maybe some of the digital models they're working on can be provided as VSTs (like a vector synth, or the BBG wavetable thing, etc)

Can't get any sense out of the 'Get Free License' button. It does nothing but tell me to re-login and try again. I'll give up and try again in a day or two.

Don't they ever test these things? Try setting your time zone for an amusing sideshow revealing how blinkered some of these programmers are.

Or try altering your privacy settings.

I dread to think what other delights await...

Yeah the license page still isn't working, I assume they got slammed by license requests and it took down the license generation server and rather than bring it back up immediately they're trying to figure out how to deal with the server load. I am curious to find out if it expects you to set up a new account or if you can use an existing MusicTribe account.

I guess if like me you only need occasional access to something synthy, are happy with presets and don’t want to spend any money, it might be useful. I’m sure there are other options for that though?

I see no excitement here. A free synth is another tool for the toolbox. Or, in your terms, a bottle of own-brand liquid in hand for when the Fairy runs out and the shop is shut.

The softsynth isn't really at all exciting, but Behringer did promise a unified free DAW a few years back and it seems like an obvious first step on fulfilling yet another long-term promise, which bodes well for other long term projects (cough VCS cough).

What's actually interesting is that not only can you not sign up for a license for it, but the product page is now gone too. So someone may have pulled the 'publish' trigger a bit early at B and the servers weren't ready.

https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2024/0 ... ntage-vst/

I managed to download it before the page disappeared, so I can confirm it installs and runs on Win10, but demands that license so I can't test it out.

I am less than excited by the prospect of yet another DAW. The world doesn't need it. :(

For the synth, I have an open mind. I'll try it out once I have a license. Nothing to lose.

Oh yes, I saw that offer as well. The synth has wave tables, oscillator sink, plate reverb etc.

I remember when I was young the children's magazines came with free products. Then I grew up and computer (and later music) magazines came with free software. Now the internet comes with free synths. Things haven't really changed much. I'm so overloaded with good synth software that I won't be downloading the Behringer one. I feel guilty for not exploring fully some of the products I bought years ago before adding newer ones to my collection.

I gave Behringer's 'Vintage' VSTi a run out earlier today. It's OK. Nothing very exciting or inspiring, but good enough for free. I doubt it will be see much use here, but you never know.

The Model 15 Grandmother clone is up for pre-order. $299/£269

It sounds like Moog. So, if that's what you want, hooray.

I was thinking of replacing my Grandmother with one of these, mainly for reliability. But does it have a spring reverb?
Preorder? what? for one of these? I'll wait until they are actually "for sale" or "in" the sale for £149.99 on Amazon.

Looks like it's a mono digital simulation, similar to the 2600 - this time without the inverted second output. Pointless IMHO. It won't please the spring verb die-hards and for we who hate springs (or want stereo reverb) it will be bypassed anyway. They could have saved 50p manufacturing costs.

Never thought people would want mono analog synths with spring reverbs in 2024

Yeah, also, that Berry Grandmum, where are the built-in speakers? I know Elf would miss those terribly.

A couple of things,
Behringer announced a new clone this time of some signal processing hardware, the 369 which is a clone of the Neve 33609. Interestingly the clone was designed by John Price who used to work for Neve and Thomann had it listed for sale and in stock immediately after launch with people having already received units.
Also surprised it's a Behringer and not a KT especially given the model number is 369-KT.

And a picture from their factory of a nice array of prototypes!,

(In case Behringer take to reading this thread...)

PLEASE, for sanity's sake, consider releasing a new version of the VC-340 with one of those 4-octave keyboards on it. I'm so sick of twiddling that octave up/down switch.
