Farfisa Find.
Just bought a Farfisa Matador,

A friend found this in a secondhand shop on his travels, called me up, and bought it for me.
He tried it out and it works fine, even has the chrome stand, and seat.
Looking forward to playing this through some old pedals.

"The Best" piece of gear is subjective.
Re: Farfisa Find.
Yes, I’m looking forward to getting this, it’s on UK soil in the back of my mates van I’m going to collect it next week.
It was €65, so even if some things don’t work it can be fixed up, but he’s played it and says it’s fine.

They don't make 'em like they used to. Is that one old enough to have all real transistors, like with three legs?

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.

Re: Farfisa Find.
Or even black glass? Like Mullard OC70 and OC71? As a kid I liked those the best, based on how they looked, The fat metal germanium ones, not so much.
That's a good looking keyboard. I'm sure plenty of good sounds could be had with some treatment, phasers and such, but I'd handle that rhythm section like Pandora's Box and keep it shut.

Re: Farfisa Find.
This will be too modern to have germanium transistors like the OC71. I'd imagine it will have a load of ordinary silicon transistors possibly in metal cans like BC109 etc, some, possibly many, TTL logic ICs and possibly the top octave generator and divider ICs used in many '70s electronic organs.

That's good, it's likely that it may be easier to repair and maintain than devices from almost any other period. Maybe no specialised custom electronic parts at all.

I heard a track today that used the rhythm section, it sounded amazing, phaser no, delay and chorus yes, then through my Shallow Water pedal, heaven.

I stand corrected.I think I was confusing it with memory of a Solina string synth, I was imagining something like the sounds on early Tangerine Dream.. Wasn't just phasers they used, but in that context they did some cool sounds with phasers added. Psychedelic, but not excessively so.
Phasers are tricky thing to use without sounding cliched.

Re: Farfisa Find.
I agree... I love a good phaser and they can be used very subtly. But everything can sound clichéd, including 1970s electronic organs through chorus, delay and reverb. Composition, arrangement and context are all....

The only use of phasing that sticks in my mind, is the refrain of "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" by Roxy Music, very powerful.
But I just cant use them, I bought one recently, and sent it back after two days, it was like a visitor you known you’re just not going to get along with.

I used to have to fix those things. As they were loved by one-man-bands that worked in German pubs and clubs, they always stank of beer and cigarettes. But yes, they are easy to work on. As far as I can remember (46 years ago now!) no special components.
You've only just noticed???

I'll see your cigarette-smelling keyboards and raise you one old and battered domestic TV circa 1990 from a household that loved heavy fry-ups and fags. This is something I do NOT regret seeing the back of. (Or I would, but seeing the back of it was part of the job..) On the other hand, I got asked to fix a club mixer once, and it was genuinely unpleasant inside. It was sort of cool though, it had a broken effects unit that made noises like an angry TARDIS. I wish I'd had the ability to record some of that at the time..

I still have a StudioQuad V2. It can be a phaser when it needs to be, but it's got so much going for it that it never outstays its welcome because it can be so many things. It beats chewing the CPU to rags when I want that to run a synth. The only downside is having to go to analog to route through it, but it's worth it, and given a signal that is already analog, well, nothing to lose..

Yes, I've got a Behringer FX2000 and a Boss SE50, the Berry is so good, you try other things, especially reverbs, then you put the Berry on and it's YES!
I'm on the look out for Yamaha SPX's, the Digitech TSR24 was a classic, so was the Quadraverb 2.
The SE50 has some great pitch effects, drums through the delay/pitch program are great, each hit slowly gets lower and lower, it's a great sound.
I've got a few pedals, but I much prefer rack units.

Re: Farfisa Find.
That IS a cool effect at times. I heard it on somethign by Bile (very uncompromising industrial/metal band from Manhattan) and I wondered how Krztoff did it, then when someone I knew gave me an old copy of a song I made with a band I was in at the time, it was on that too, for the vocal. I had forgotten it completely. All I know is, it was from a dedicated 1U rack delay box that I'd obviously sorely underestimated. Our singer didn't underestimate it, I remember he liked it, a lot.
Rack units in general, I do like, but they have to be very versatile to stay here, I already have too many cables running riot.

Yes, there's a few things I'd like back, Eventide H3000, the Boss SE70 is a great contender, and the Yamaha SPX900, these are about it for me

I have heard plenty phased strings.
The one I find haunting subtle is Equinoxe2 by JmJ.

I had a local copy of it so I listened to it just now (I'd lost track of just how good it is, and Oxygene too). That's a very nice example of a phaser. It's easier to hear the bandpass slightly resonant filter on what may or may not be a Mellotron sound, but that light string sound with the phasers is like noctiluminescant cloud, really nice. JMJ seems to have a kind of synaesthesiac ability to describe space, upper atmosphere, etc.
I remember SPX90, and heard that SPX900 was a big improvement, but I never had either. Apart from the StudioQuad V2, the thing I like so much I bought three, as and when I could get one, is the Oberheim GM-400 (I like having backups for rare stuff). Putting my bass through that with a carefully tweaked patch I can get a JJ Burnel-like crunch out of it. There may be other ways but I liked it better than a Line 6 Pod I heard someone use once. The Oberheim is much cheaper and smaller than getting that sound with a Hiwatt amp. I put the output through a Class D IMG Stageline amp into Ashdown cabs. Not conventional, but it works.

I've never liked J M J's music, nice enough bloke though.
