Modular thunder patch

Post by Arpangel »

Posted about this awhile back, thought I'd share my experiments for anyone looking to conjure up a convincing storm in their studio.
I tried various ways, but ended up with a nice patch using noise as a source, I started out using an oscillator set to a very low frequency, it worked, but didn’t have the character I needed which is a nice unpredictable distant "rolling thunder"
You can substitute any of the modules I'm using here, they will just give you variations, different flavours.
My patch starts with the noise generator in my 2600 Gray Meanie, I like this because it has a "low" setting, very useful for thunder, it sounds good without the need to EQ the noise with another filter, it then goes into a Behringer ARP 1006 Filtamp set to high resonance which gives the sound more weight when tuned to the right frequency, the frequency knob will determine the character of the thunder, then out of the filter into a VCA of your choice.
The trigger and modulation comes from a Behringer ARP 1036 Sample & Hold module, this is a dual module, I use one side to to trigger an envelope generator, in this case, the Behringer System 100 EG, which I like because it has a nice gentle character, which suits these types of sounds, this then goes to trigger the VCA.
The other side of the S&H module goes to the Filtamp, for random timbral changes, the great thing about the 1036 is that you have different S&H times on each side.
All CV's go through attenuators so you can vary things in real-time.
Quite a simple patch but it really does sound very convincing, I add some reverb from my FX2000 which has a sort of 3D effect, very useful for nature sounds.
I have a nice rain patch for my 2600, very realistic, with a general "wash" of rain, plus, it has occasional random "drips" which make it more realistic, I’ll post this patch later.

Addendum.

Solution, to this nightmare modular rabbit hole patching maze no memory’s thing-thang.
Fed up with not being able to store stuff, it is a total f*****g nightmare.
OK, my solution "just learn shit!!!!!" learn how to get to certain places in my head, the only way to do this is 10 hours a day, don’t get up until its "in there" in your head, I say "thunder" oh yes, I can do that in as long as it takes to patch it.
This all goes against the grain for me, as I’m an explorer, with no particular place to go, I’m happy just to patch away until something happens, this is all very well, but it's starting to piss me off, it's OK if you just want a brassy lead, or a nice layered saw five, but the sounds I need to "know" how to get are things like "a demon running around in the loft during an electrical storm" or
"someone smashing ten grandfather clocks while a steam train idles in the background" not so easy.
What I have found is that it helps to distill your case down, into modules you known are absolutely essential, nothing that wastes space or only "rarely" gets used, it makes it quicker to get to sounds without getting distracted by, "distractions"
