Which one to buy: Sennheisers HD600 or Beyerdynamic DT 880pro

Post by Inconsistent »

So I am stuck between these two headphones which one to buy, I am getting Sennheiser HD600 for something around 19k and Beyerdynamic DT880 pro for around 15k on amazon India my budget is around $200 - $300 (INR20k - INR25k)

I suspect that the Senn 600 must be a remodeled one if anyone of you have it can you tell me how’s the soundstage and its response, I’ve read a lot about DT880’s for how good they are but I’ve also read it that they have piercing highs can someone give their views on it.

My sole purpose to buy either of this is for an upgrade from my previously owned M50x which has relative smaller soundstage being a closed back but they are good as well.

I’ll pair either of these with Audient ID 14mkii interface. What are your views?

I have a pair of HD600s but I haven't compared them to the DT880s. To me they give a well balanced presentation which is similar to the sound of my monitors. The only drawback is a lack of low bass - but then I also have a pair of HD25s which have a decent bass response although they aren't as accurate.

The HD600s have worked fine with all the headphone outputs that I've tried them on although they do seem to reveal the shortcomings of really cheap headphone amps.

Thank you James for your reply, can I ask for one more favour can you clear two of my doubts.

1. Do you think, since HD600 being an open back headphone I'll have a hard time monitoring everything, I have a bedroom studio which is not well treated, even when I have my M50x on I still hear outside noise like construction and other random noise.
2. I am buying either of these for the main purpose of production and composition and not only for mixing and mastering, can I get away with the bass roll of?

(The following is from a complete amateur without a strong technical knowledge base)

Hi,

I'm in love with my Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pros (using them even convinced me to buy the closed back Beyer 770s for tracking). They feel sooo nice on the ears, I can work for hours on them and feel OK.

(I bought them based on high marks received in this review, https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/st ... adphones-0 , quite old and almost certain to have been updated with a version you may find more helpful today).

Having said that, and the main reason for this post, is I am getting emotionally geared up to say goodbye to the 880s, and replace them with the Slate VSX cans, based on another SOS review (from just a few months ago, https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/st ... -audio-vsx ), solely for the ability to hear what my mixes would sound like in a professional studio, as well as a few other listening environments, without needing multiple other apps loaded into my DAW (Sonarwo rks, etc.).

Hopefully you can access the article (I think it may be behind a pay wall for a few more months). If you can't, noting you mentioned your room is not highly treated (mine can be described that way as well, if "non-treated" falls into that category 😄) I recommend considering paying for that single article so you can read about it.

(Of course there are multiple Youtube vids about it, but you can never be too sure about objectivity in reporting there as you can in SOS).

Hope that is helpful!

Hello. I am a fan of Sennheiser. Personally I work with Sennheiser HD 490 now. Maybe this will be interesting for you too. Talking about your options, the HD600 offers a balanced sound signature with a wide soundstage, ideal for critical listening and mixing. Given your setup with the Audient ID14mkii interface, either headphone will likely deliver a noticeable upgrade from the M50x, enhancing your overall listening and production experience.

There are SoS forumees fine with the highs of DT880pro. For me it's highs were uncomfortable on vocals high up violins played high up flutes synth sounds played high hihats rides. So I didn't keep my DT880pro.

I have Shure1440 open back it's highs are prominent at least as prominent as DT880 pro, yet Shure1440 highs are not unccomfotable for me so I have been using them from march this year.

Both of those are much more open in design than the M50, as I guess you know. Without correction, I wouldn't use the DT880 long-term (because of the treble boost) - otherwise I rather like them. If you want to work "flat", I'd have to recommend the Sennheiser. However, a pretty simply EQ on your main bus will fix much of the DT880 issue, if you're willing and able.

Sennheiser has superior detail in the mids, as well as treble accuracy, but need a simple bass lift.

I would definitely recommend taking a look at the HD490, they are excellent. Neumann NDH30 and Shure SRH1840 are my other favourites in that sort of price bracket.
