The Cutting Room

Post by James Perrett »

Over the last few weeks I've hinted at a new project that is on the go here with Tegan, one of the writers/singers from The Eclectics. We've called ourselves The Cutting Room after Tegan spotted an old tape box with a Townhouse Cutting Room label on it in my living room and thought it would make a good name.

Much of this project is about writing new songs but, just for fun, we created a song for Liv, one of the other Eclectics who is about to do her first gig with a punk band. It is rough and raw - like punk rock should be!

Fans of punk rock will recognise the tune too.

Thanks guys - it is all good fun. Tegan and I went to a blues jam tonight and ended up turning it into a reggae jam!

Well it started life as a Ramones song - but then Tegan rewrote all the lyrics.

Well the weather around here is looking a bit better for the next few days so maybe it is appropriate to share this...

Yes, it is another cover but totally changed around with the backing based on an old Rhythm Collision jam session with added horns.

The lead vocalist has Dawn Penn vibes.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j4vjVetZP ... 5vIG5vIG5v

The space in the song for all the parts making me smile.

I recently got Akg K245 semiopen phones 20squid used 2nd hand, I can heartily recommend them to anybody on a budget hear the Bass clearly, which on this song is making me groove.

::

This only applies to my overly sensitive ears, the Electric Guitar hurts my ears a trifle, for my ears I would have taken its top oorrff somewhat.

That's the kind of sound that the guitarist, Mark Stamos, has always gone for so I'm pretty immune to it now. I keep hoping that our old vocalist will get his act together and put up some of the old Rhythm Collision tracks online so that I could point you to them but the nearest currently is

https://youtu.be/vKuEJojOSIs?si=CeUj3qH0rU0nrkoe

where the guitar is actually a little mellower than usual for Mark.

I've just been setting up a Soundcloud for us and realised that I've not really shared any of our original songs - possibly because I keep feeling that they aren't quite finished... So here's something very reflective

https://soundcloud.com/cuttingroom-9613 ... d9572b3dbc

The guitar and vocals are pretty much live with just simple overdubs.

Catching up on the stuff that's been added since the last time I was in this thread. This one's a heart breaker. Good work.

Thanks for all your kind words. Yes, this has to be one of the most emotional songs I've ever played on and intensely personal for Tegan. It was one of the songs that was in danger of getting overlooked with The Eclectics but I felt it was too good to have it disappear.

Missed this first time through. Very nice.

Any chance of a printed version of the vocals?

So well done!

I'm not sure what happened to the post above as I'm sure I actually posted it back in August. Unfortunately the only copy of the lyrics is on Tegan's iPad.

Well, I'm glad the techno gremlins somehow did bring your post up months after the fact - I wouldn't have heard your song otherwise! :D

Lou Reed would have done it slightly differently. But he would have done it.

We both quite like Lou Reed and have messed around with a couple of Velvet Underground songs - in fact my son overheard us talking about him on a phone call and asked "Why were you talking about newspapers in the toilet?"
