Interesting.
I would respectfully suggest some means of weeding out those who hear about this and then join purely to use the forum for free advertising :(

Seemingly no longer an 'elderly'.
Now a 'Senior'. Is that promotion?

Have some faith in humanity, Will... or failing that, in the SOS team and moderators!

However, it will be an entirely separate sub-section of the forum and won't affect the main forums in any way other than appearing in the Forum Index list.

Naturally, it will be carefully monitored and moderated, but the same arrangement seems to work well over at 'the other place'... and if it brings some fresh users to the forum that's a good thing too.

Fundamentally though, this change brings several significant technical benefits to the SOS website going forward, and it enhances the experience for those using the service in several key ways.

And the current Readers Ads system is free, Dave, and the forum version will be too. That's kind of the point.

If this is part of the forum upgrade package? Is so, is there any way that we can select from the user control panel what sub-forums are on display?

Reliably fallible.

No, it's not, and no you can't...

But I believe the free ads entries will be excluded from the current New Posts search, so they won't intrude on normal forum use.

Ahaha peepull will feel there is kudos advertising on a forum directly associated with a prestigious magazine as SoS.

Also hopefully peepull will upload video link of the gear they are selling demoing it showing closeups, with their avatar name written on a card next to the gear.
When we trek halfway across the country to transact we will have a fair idea.

They will for me. I hardly ever use that function.

Never been there so did not know. No reason it should be be free. Not likely to use it anyway.
Carry on.

In which case, it won't intrude at all. It's just going to be another sub-forum in the list which you can happily ignore.

Hi Wonks. Not really, that's on the cards for 2025's roadmap.

Wonks wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2024 11:36 am Is there any way that we can select from the user control panel what sub-forums are on display?

User Control Panel does not offer this, sadly, but the Forum Index has always had collapsible SHOW / HIDE clickable buttons - see the attached screenshot.

I will ensure that SOS Readers Ads forum is in its own Category, meaning with one click or tap, it can be hidden if required by Forum members who have no use for it.

The SOS Forum is the collectively highest-trafficked pages of our site so it makes sense to keep readers here as long as possible. :)

Just tried to place a free reader advert, but the site wont let me actually post it. A 'Keep Out!' ( :smirk: ) symbol keeps appearing. Can't see anything I'm doing wrong or anything different from how I've posted ads before. Colour me confused. Help.

After a while, based on user experiences and feedback, the SOS Reader's Ads were moved back out of the forum and into their own category again (as per the announcement here) but it may not be obvious given this topic. The link below is the correct location to create an ad. Apologies for any confusion.

Red category links only appear when there is a live posted ad in that category.

In bed with flu on mobile so hard to get links.

Try CREATE FREE AD and view categories selector dropdown.

DRAT!!! You were right 100% Tony (Arpangel).

The Synthesisers: Keyboards and Synthesizers: Modules categories have disappeared in the back office Taxonomy module. I cannot fix while on mobile phone, but will re-add them on Monday 6th on desktop Mac.

Apologies folks. 🤭😳☺️
