Just read this

If you've never heard him, do yourself a favour and listen to Solid Air.

A very sad day.

It was hid mid-80's album 'Piece by Piece' that first got me into John Martyn - one of those albums that loads of 60' / 70's singer-songwriters released where they tried to get hip with all the new sampling tech and drum machines that everyone felt obliged to use at the time, and ended up sounding like a bag of crap. Except he didn't - you got the sense listening to it that he still knew how to make a song shine through all the distractions. Still sounds pretty fresh today!

But you'll never beat 'Solid Air' for its restorative powers with your significant other..... God bless John Martyn.

Having read a biography of John recently and wondered how on earth he survived so long, this isn't unexpected news. But it's dreadful, terrible, saddening news all the same. One of the World's greatest singing and songwriting talents has gone and I doubt we'll ever hear his like again.

Best wishes John. May you never....

Martin

Indeed 'Grace And Danger' for me is "the" album.

Strange thing happened to me, on wednesday evening there was a movie on dutch tv called 'Serendipity' wich is also a John Martyn song so that made me think of him.
Next morning I woke up with songs of his in my head, had that the whole day, came home and read the news.

Very sad news, he made a huge impression on me when I was fifteen, saw him a few times in Amsterdam (Paradiso).

I just read on Tracy Thorn's Myspace blog that Solid Air was the first record that she and Ben Watt listened to together.

I still can't quite believe he's gone and snuffed it.

Seems we're losing a lot of greats. :frown:

What's even sadder is that we don't seem to be making many new ones...

I heard Spen on the word service, about 4.30 and horribly put 2 and 2 together, coming out of sleep. Very sad, what a genius, what great music.

Bugger :frown:

Had the pleasure of seeing him several times, last time in the Avalon tent at Glastonbury in 2000, one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Had intended to see the Solid Air / Grace and Danger performances but never got around to it.

He'll be missed, a unique voice.

BTW if you want the ultimate late night comedown song, listen to In the Wee Small Hours (from One World) at around one in the morning, preferably with a glass of something...
