Hi All,
having read several articles on the subject, I'm still unclear as to the correct
cabling for hooking-up an RNP to RNC to a Scarlett 212 4thgen.
I'm currently using 2x20inch [balanced?] Visiosound trs cables.
RNP-OUT - RNC-IN [left or mono]
RNC-OUT [left or mono] - Scarlett line-in.
It sounds ok, but am I doing it right?
Please advise.
Cheers.
Kj
Hooking-up RNP to RNC
Re: Hooking-up RNP to RNC
This is not ideal because the RNC has unbalanced inputs and outputs.
A better solution, using your existing TRS cables would be to use the two (unbalanced) insert connections between the RNP and RNC, with the two RNP balanced outputs connected to the interface.
The manual for the preamp recommends connecting the RNC in this way.

Re: Hooking-up RNP to RNC
Hugh,
So, using these balanced cables [short, each with a TRS jack at either end], I should have plugged one end into the RNP - INSERT OUT, [not the A OUT].
So the connections should be :-
Mic into RNP- XLR, into
RNP - INSERT- OUT, into RNC- IN [LEFT{or mono}]section.
RNC- OUT [LEFT{or mono}]section, into Scarlett- LINE IN.
Is this correct?
Many thanks.
Keith

Re: Hooking-up RNP to RNC
Close, but No...
As I said, it is explained in the equipment manuals.
The connections are:
Mic 1 — XLR-XLR cable — RNP MIC IN A
(And repeat for B channel)
RNP Insert — TRS-TRS cable — RNC Left In
(And repeat for B channel to Right In)
RNP Output — TRS-TRS cable — Interface Line In.
(And repeat for B channel)
(The RNC output is not connected to anything)
This arrangement wires the compressor directly into the preamp's internal signal path, and uses the preamp's balanced output, post-compressor, to feed the interface.
The compressor has only unbalanced connections, which is why its better to connect as above.
The confusing part is that the compressors unbalanced input is actually wired like an (inverted) insert socket, which allows it to be connected directly to console (and preamp) insert points using a single TRS cable, instead of the usual Y split cables).

Re: Hooking-up RNP to RNC
Gosh, its almost as if FMR Audio had designed the two devices to work together!

It would be really nice if there was a standard for "inverted insert sockets" on outboard devices. I hate TRS to TS 'Y' cords - always a 50/50 chance of getting the patch wrong...

Re: Hooking-up RNP to RNC
Hello. A related query.
I'm thinking of getting an RNP to connect to the unbalanced TS inputs on my RME Babyface Pro FS. In this scenario would it be best to use have TS cables coming out of the RNP "insert" or "out"?
KInd regards,
Dave

TS cables from RNP Main Outs to Babyface Line 3/4 in.
