IP networking training.

Post by shufflebeat »

Not sure where to park this but there’s no “Prof Dev” or training forum (possibly “DiY elect and Studio) please feel free to move it.

It looks like the future of music tech is based around IP networking, something I know precious little about. Can anyone recommend a resource for curious dummies?

You have my sympathy Shuffs! I was totalled boggled by a 'simple' network camera. The number of parameters you needed to setup was headache inducing. The camera contained a memory card but despite a month's trying I never did manage to access it remotely. I assumed one did not have to go up a ladder every few days to see what was captured?

Sad thing was the picture quality was stunningly good...WHEN I could see it! Fortunately Amazon gave me a full refund even though it was a month or so out of warranty. I can only conclude that I was just one of hundreds and they were cutting their losses and time wasting?

You might want to have a look at the online AOIP training offered by our friends at Calrec, starting here;

https://calrec.com/courses/aoip-training-part-1/

I would suggest that having a look at the Dante training would be useful as well;

How about study guides for certifications? Such as, https://www.howtonetwork.com/free-ccna- ... ccna-book/
Plenty of others out there, I just searched, and picked that one as an example.

Have you done a search for SOS articles? I know that there was a good one on audio networking a few years ago.

https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/ethernet-audio

is probably the one I was thinking of.

Thanks muchly, folks. Looks like I’ll be living on coffee and noodles for a few days while I explore the topic.

Part of the problem I have is the sheer volume of info and picking the right rabbit-hole to dive into, these suggestions will help greatly.

I did do a scan of SoS but, like the topic itself, the answer you get depends a lot on how you present the question and that in turned is informed by your understanding, of which I have none.

…yet.

Ta, gang, any more suggestions gratefully received.

As the author of the article James was kind enough to link to above, I feel a bit queasy about doing this, but I really would recommend it as a good introduction to the topic.

I wrote it specifically to explain why, when Ethernet is the oldest external connection on most modern computers, we're only 'now' using it for audio interfacing. As such it covers the evolution of Ethernet from its inception, and the protocols that were introduced to facilitate real-time audio, either on top of Ethernet directly (AVB), or on top of IP (Dante and Ravenna).

Looking at it now there's plenty I'd change (of course), but in my humble opinion, it still stands up as a pretty good way to get up to speed on what is not only a vast and complex topic (AoE/AoIP), but one which has many complex entanglements with an infinitely vaster and more complex topic still (networking generally).

Thanks Johnsy, I think I probably did read that back in 2017 but I was still really new to SoS (and audio engineering in general) at that point and I doubt I understood any of it.
Now I think I might understand some of it so I'm taking that as progress! :D

Thanks, Drew - glad you could get something out of it. Even for SOS it's pretty technical stuff, but I knew that if any readership could take it (and benefit from it) it would be this one.

That’s a great piece, nicely focussed to be informative but readable (with pauses for breath).

Thanks for all that. I’ve got some reading/watching to do and will come back with further questions.
