MIDI switcher box

Post by paleface »

hello all

ive set up both of my soundcards (axe i/o one and a focusrite scarlett 2in4)

to use reaper(the focusrite) and a second portable install of reaper (for the axe i/o )

and the setup now works well following some previous forum advice

what i need now is some sort of midi switch so i can send the midi from my keyboard and pedalboard between the 2 cards as im using them

i would need to be able to switch between the keyboard and the pedalboard

and also send wichever midi device is selected

between the 2 soundcards

as anyone got advice on how to do this as cheaply as possible ?

Does the keyboard or pedalboard have MIDI thru? If so, maybe you could use that to combine them, then run that into a MIDI splitter like the CME Thru5.

(Their U6MIDIPro might also be an option; haven't studied the details but it looks like you can use a graphical interface to assign inputs to multiple outputs. It's more flexible and only slightly more expensive.)

MorningStar ML5; from ThorpyFX. 5 MIDI programmable mono channels, but you could use 2 for stereo.

Does the midi need to go through the audio interface or could you use a separate midi interface?

? If this is an either or situation I don't see the need for anything more complex than a double pole change over switch? It's only 'lektrik' after all.

There are much cheaper MIDI splitters around. I'm on my phone right now but a quick search suggested this:

I thought I'd messed up for a minute, thinking that MIDI Thru included data from the device as well as the input...but it doesn't usually. But it sounds like the FCB1010 can, so maybe I got away with it?
