Attaching velcro to Macbook Air for a stand - damage?
Attaching velcro to Macbook Air for a stand - damage?
I am wanting to attach 3m Dual-Lock (very strong hook/loop) to the rear of my macbook air to enable attachment to a stand.
My question is, would constant attaching/removing damage either the rear panel or parts inside? As you remove the stand plate connected to the dual-lock, I imagine it would "pull" the back panel a bit....
This stuff is pretty strong and different to the usual fibre based tape.

I don't know whether you could do something similar for the Macbook, but my lad has just made a batch of backplate protectors for Boss pedals which allow you to attach the pedal to a pedal board with Velcro without the adhesive damaging the back plate of the pedal.

That sounds interesting - can you post up a pic or instructions/link?
If not that's cool.

I used to get seriously PO'ed when peeps stuck Velcro to the bottom of guitar pedals over the foil mod' ser' number label. I felt like billing them for in warranty work but never did. So, avoid any such information labels on the macbook.
But why go for super strong stuff? Surely standard grade would be more than strong enough? After all the big selling point of the 'Air' is surely that it weighs next to FA? FYI I have a Xenyx 802 mixer stuck thus to a wall in my back bedroom. Not fallen off this six years!
Dave.

There are various hard shell cases available for the air. If you got one of those, you could put the Velcro on that
Thinking mode engaged. “I wonder if you could design a 3d printed clip on holder that replaces the top of a K&M music stand…Hmmm.”

Here's the first one he made

and the model he worked from is at

though the holes end up a little small and require drilling out.

I have a MacBook Pro semi-permanently mounted in a 3U rack case for live use. This allows me to keep all but one of the flimsy consumer grade computer connectors hidden away and secured with hot glue and cable ties. The case also holds the audio and MIDI interface, all the PSUs, mains distribution system and DI/isolation boxes for the PA feed. All the connections to the PA and the rest of the band's equipment are made with more robust XLRs. Accessing the computer and patch panel is done by removing the front and top lids. The laptop sits in a cutout made of the sort of foam you find in equipment flight cases, with the connections on the front panel which makes them much easier to find when we have less than 15 minutes to set up and line check at a gig.

Thanks for the great replies - I went with the suggestion for the case and then attach the "sticky stuff" to it!

CC
Never. It doesn't have to work very hard for what I use it for. 3-4 plug-in instruments and a similar number of effects plus a couple of channels of MIDI program changes and CCs for the live instruments is the maximum load. The CPU meter never even reaches the half-way mark, and even then only peaks briefly. Besides the two metal rack trays it sits on act as a reasonably efficient heat sink
