Is a new Behringer X-touch coming ?

Post by DolbyNR »

I am in the process of purchasing a controller for my DAW. After researching various brands and models, I have concluded that the Behringer X-Touch would adequately meet my requirements.

However, I have observed that many retailers no longer have this model available, with some indicating that it will remain out of stock, while others suggest it may be restocked in a few weeks or months.

Could this indicate that the X-Touch is reaching the end of its product lifecycle, considering it has been on the market for approximately ten years?

Or has there been any discussion regarding a potential MKII version?

I've heard nothing about a new model from Behringer. They seem to have turned their attention to synth recreations. I'd look at other brands now if I were you.

I'm not sure what they'd replace it with - I mean, what is it lacking that a MkII might bring?
I suspect it's more likely just a temporary hiccup in supply, that's not an uncommon scenario with Music Tribe stuff.

My wish for MKII :
An on/off switch (yes, the current one needs to be unplugged or attached to a centralised power switch)
An internal power supply or USB powered
2 assignable midi CC sliders
Coloured scribble strip display

Both my X-Touch and X-Touch Expander have integral power supplies and on / off switches. Are you thinking about the X-Touch One?

As above, my X-Touch has all that and the coloured scribble strips.

I think that you only get the coloured scribble strips when using the X-touch with the XR18 or other Behringer/Midas digital mixers. Mine certainly only has monochrome when using with Reaper, despite having the channels colour coded in the DAW.

I use a remote script with Cubase that supports the X-Touch's colours. I also managed to figure out the messages myself, so I get colour scribble strips with my performance software, Cantabile.

I would think someone could drum up similar for Reaper, but that's not me - I only skim Reaper's surface when I have to.

You also need the latest X-Touch firmware.

What witchery is that!! Does that work with other controllers too?

Scribble strip colours (crucial for me) are the reason I went to - very expensive - Avid controllers.

A point of order gentlemen, the displays in the X-Touch (and X32/M32 mixers) are monochrome with coloured backlights rather than full colour. That is fairly obvious in the images but not so much from the text of the relevant posts.

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

A quick check on the X-Air app shows the Sam is correct, only 8 colours and 8 inverse of those colours available. I'd never realised that before.

However, if the X-Touch uses RGB and W LEDs for the scribble strips then theoretically far more colour combinations should be possible.

I'm 99% sure the LCDs on the X-Touch are the same as on the X32/M32 et al. The do look identical.

I see what you are saying, but it makes no practical difference as an 'at a glance' aid.

The limitation, as far as MCU is cocerned, is that only eight colours can be accessed via the MIDI message.

They are:
00 - Dark
01 - Red
02 - Green
03 - Yellow
04 - Blue
05 - Pink/Purple
06 - Cyan
07 - White

Dunno. It would depend on the controller. I just figured out the MIDI message to access colour in the X-Touch. AFAIK the message is standard MCU, so if a controller is colour-able it should respond.

Agreed, it's perfectly satisfactory and having a colour LCD would not be significantly more useful.

WRT available colours only eight colours are available on the X32 plus blank (and these can be reversed) again perfectly acceptable for the job in hand.

Yes, I had intended to purchase the X-Touch ONE as my friend strongly advised against purchasing the unreliable ICON P1 Nano.

Since I'm more interested in CC control faders than channel faders... Can the faders on the X-Touch (the biggest model with the jog wheel) be assigned to CC control?

The faders generate pitchbend messages in MCU mode, which is the only mode I use, but it has other modes and it also would be fairly simple to convert pitchbend to a CC, depending on what software you are using it with - I know I could do it easily with Cubase and Cantabile. I'm sure other DAWs will allow for it.
