Recommend reserve or buy it now price for AKG C414

Post by mozart999uk »

Hi all. Hope this is ok to ask here.

I'm selling my AKG C414 B-ULS with flight case, shock-mount and foam windscreen.

I really don't like selling on ebay but needs must.

Can anyone recommend a reserve price ?

I've had look at what's currently for sale and past listings and they seem to range from £500 up to £800.

I don't normally put reserve figures on but had a few bad experiences with things selling for little money in the past due to bidders dropping out so want to make sure I get a sensible-ish price for it....

I will advertise it on the SOS classifieds as well once I get an idea of what it's worth.....

The B-ULS is a classic amongst the 414 hegemony, and they're not made anymore.

In today's market I'd expect to pay around £800 for a good one with all the accessories, maybe a bit more.

But at the end of the day its only ever worth what someone is willing to pay. If you need to recover a set minimum value then that must be your reserve. Personally, I'd set it around the £800 mark if yours is in A1 condition with accessories or a bit less if you want a quick sale.

I'm about to go through a similar process with a microphone collection (not mine) and I find that telling Ebay to show only completed listings can be a good way to assess the value of something - provided that it is something that is sold on there fairly regularly.

I've also had quite a bit of success recently using a buy it now price rather than an auction. If you set the price slightly higher than the price you would settle for then people can always make you an offer.

Thanks James. I've never tried a buy it now price. Will give that a go :-)

I've found the Price Guide on Reverb to be a fairly reliable indicator. Similar to filtering only completed items on eBay, it shows prices for sold items. It's US centric and, reflective of the markedly bigger marketplace, prices tend to be different to the UK where the supply/demand relationship is different. For what it's worth it suggests an AKG C414 BULS in mint condition is worth £567-707 based on 19 sales in the last six months, and £548-683 for one that is merely excellent based on 88 sales in the last six months.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Thanks - that's helpful. A bit lower than I was expecting (maybe the exchange rate?) but gives me an idea :-)

I had a look just now and I would say that the prices are skewed lower by some very strange looking transactions which, judging from the listings for other versions, may be just the capsule or other parts. Looks like a good source of information though if you discount the outliers.

Personally, I think there is no point in setting a reserve price for an eBay listing. Either quote a Buy It Now price, or start the auction at the minimum price you'll accept.

£800 seems optimistic for a C414 B-ULS to me. The only one I can see in Sold Listings on eBay recently fetched £571 and looked like a good example.
