I was intrigued to see the four speakers each behind a 7b on (pretty cheap looking, lightweight!) boom stands. If it was some 'Arty-farty' idea it was wasted on me since the relatively huge microphones dominated the scene. I was also constantly worried that one of the more animated speakers would clout one!
This setup was in marked contrast to Question Time before it where everyone was discretely 'tacked up'. Do they always do this on Newscast? I regularly watch QT but am usually asleep before the end!
I struggled to see but could not find a Shure logo on any of the mics so I assume they were genuine and the Beeb has not got a slack palette of Chinese knock offs? Have to say, it all sounded well up to BBC standard.
Dave.
SM7bs on Newscast
Re: SM7bs on Newscast
I think it might be something to do with underlining the “Podcasting” element of the theme. The use of huge Beyerdynamic headphones (with the branding obscured with black ‘leccy tape) would seem to support this.
I can imagine there being some discussion in the tech dept. with some questioning the use of bean tins and ear-muffs when the usual approach is to make the tech as unobtrusive as possible.
All looks a bit CBBC to my eyes.

Oh, PODDY! Had not thought of that. Just looked very cluttered to me. Not to mention a trip hazard!
Dave.

That looks like the K&M logo on the mic stands?
The cables were all running behind the chairs, the mic stands were positioned so their legs weren't sticking out in front. the carpeted bit where the contributors would have been walking was clear of any cables etc, the only trip hazard is the coffee table!

Er... yeah..... any clue as to what the heck you're talking about? I'm not receiving your psychic projections over here. Must be the weather....
The last time I checked out Newscast they were using Neumann TLM103s mounted in cradles on K&H banquet stands with short boom arms.
...the relatively huge microphones dominated the scene.
The podcast is a radio production, not a TV effort... so they use proper mics placed properly, as radio has always done, with everyone wearing headphones in the standard radio way. The videoing of it is a secondary feature... (allowing them to 'sell' the programme to TV too!).
This setup was in marked contrast to Question Time before it where everyone was discretely 'tacked up'.
A TV programme made by TV producers in the standard TV way....

Ah.... thank you so much!

Looks like that might have been an OB from the conference, rather than the usual radio studio setup.... or maybe they're trying to make it look more TV-friendly, or just more like the average tiktok vlog thing...

Re: SM7bs on Newscast
As someone that watches this programme on a regular basis, this, I believe, is the new setup and as has been said, looking more podcasty than the more traditional Studio setup. Only been a couple of episodes like this, that I've seen. They are using the Shure mics as someone got up from the chair and clearly was off mic and much quieter. At least they have them plugged in unlike some other podcasts that I've seen!
