Mackie 32 8 Bus Phantom Power Dead? HELP

Post by JoshieC »

Recently got a Mackie 32 8 mixing console, I've got it setup and all my patch bays routed properly. however the phantom power isn't doing anything...

I've got sontronics drum mics setup which all require phantom power. I turn on the global 8ch switch and wait a minute like the manual suggests but I can't get any signal from any condenser mic... I've tried using other 8ch switches and not going through my patch bay. I've also tried different power outlets invcluding a Samson power strip.

I'm hoping I'm just missing a button or switch somewhere but it seems unlikely for phantom power.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

Phantom power is only present on the XLR inputs, not the quarter inch inputs — in case that's an issue with your use of patchbays.

Some versions of the Mackie 8 bus have individual phantom switches on each channel. Some have switches per block of 8 channels, and some have master switches near the mains inlet. There's usually an LEDs near some or all of these switches to indicate when phantom is turned on.

If you're sure you have operated all the relevant switches and you're still not getting phantom, then its probably a fault in the power supply.

Remember that phantom needs the cable screen connection to return current to the psu (in case you have lifted any grounds to cure ground loops)

If you have a digital multimeter you can check for the presence of phantom by probing an input XLR socket. Put the black probe on pin1 and the red probe on pin 2 or pin 3. Both should show somewhere between 46 and 52V DC.

By patch bays I mean xlr patch bays so that shouldn't be an issue. However I've tried plugging the mics directly in anyway.

Mines got a switch per 8 and I couldn't find a master switch anywhere nor does it say it has one in the Manual :/

I'll have to get a multimeter to check it out but it may be an issue with the supply like you said, though everything else it powered fine like the meter bridge and the other Leds. I have a spare Tascam interface so I may use that for the moment to act as a preamp/48v supply and then invest in some nice press like audient.
