Reaper Users - advice please (re-recording a track completely within Reaper)

Post by alexis »

Hello!

I'm a Cubase user, but my music computer and interface are in boxes, so I'm limited to my Windows Surface Pro. I do have Cubase loaded up on it, but Cubase does not allow me to record a youtube audio (AFAIK),so I have downloaded Reaper for that purpose, and amazingly enough have been successful in getting the youtube audio recorded as a track in Reaper.

I know how to Render in Reaper, I feel like I should get a Nobel Prize for Technology, but no, someone beat me to it again this year!:lol:

What I'd like to ask for help now please is ... what buttons do I need to push to:
1) Have Reaper transpose the recorded audio down 200 cents/two half-steps
2) Record the transposed audio as a .wav file which I can then render and get on my phone.

I should say I'm doing all this for personal reasons, to give me a backing file to sing some extra harmonies in.

Thank you! :)

Click “FX” on the track panel
“Add” - Reapitch
Season to taste

File/render:

Master mix
Entire project
Decide destination and output file name
(chosen WAV output settings)
*optional - “dry run” (check clipping, LUFS, etc.)

Render.

This is great, shufflebeat, thank you! I can hear the playback 200c lower now, perfect!

One more question please: It's only a portion of the transposed wave file I want to render. How do I tell Reaper to only render that portion?

Using Cubase reflexes, I've "dragged the triangles" across the top part of the file, to include only the portion of interest, thinking I somehow need to activate that selection to let Reaper know only to render between the two triangles. But maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree!

Thanks again!

My preferred way to do it would be to
- click on the item you want to change
- hit F2 to bring up item properties (I keep this open all the time because I find it very useful)
- In the pitch adjust box choose how many semitones you want to change the pitch by
- Click Apply

You can then play the file to check that it sounds as you expect and then render.

If there are artefacts after you adjust the pitch then you may want to change the algorithm. You can do this by going to

File->Project Settings...->Default Pitch Shift Mode and choosing an alternative algorithm from the drop down list.

When you click OK in the project settings dialogue this will automatically update the algorithm that is being used so you can audition it just by hitting play.

Alternatively, you should be able to take the file that you've recorded in Reaper and load it in Cubase so that you can do all your processing with the software that you are familiar with. Cubase and Reaper should record audio to a format that each other can read even though the project files are incompatible.

Use the mouse to highlight the selection you want to render in the timebar at the top.
Then in the Render window in the top right select the 'selected time period' or whatever it actually says.

Time selection: set start point*
Time selection: set end point*

Then in “render”, instead of “entire project” choose “time selection”

*I have my own shortcuts for these but if you go - action/show action list and search up “time selection set” in the filter window they’ll pop up.

Otherwise, trim item to size then render “selected items”

[edit] as you can see there are 101 ways to do the things you want :):)

I use Reaper for stereo editing a lot and I would just use "split item at cursor' (twice) to isolate the section I wanted to change in pitch, highlight it and 'right click' and 'item properties' then 'pitch adjust (semitones)'.
