It’s crazy Martin, I'm spoilt for choice, two gigs in two places that I visit often.

You'll have to get electricity down there first...

While I don't think we have any nights that are specifically for electronic music around here, I have seen one guy get up at a normal open mic with a tray full of gadgets and play a pretty good set - in fact I would be tempted to say that it was one of the best performances of that night.

From the venuuus I'd do Adelaide Ontario SantaCruz in my TARDIS.
Few months before lockdown went to one near KingsCross large basement of pub. Was trriffic. Packed. A dude had courage to go on stage dressed as a new romantic was a standout performance he is the only one I readily recall.

There's a regular event in Norwich that I've been meaning to infiltrate. It mostly attracts Eurorack/laptop vultures, but maybe they'd find room for a hippy and his vintage gadgets.
Re: Electronic music open nights
There was one in Glastonbury village back last month that I fully intended to go to just to scope it out.

Ah, actually that might be a solution to the problem - a hand crank generator!

Re: Electronic music open nights
It’s open to all types of electronics, I think.
I'd like to play, but my live box is defunct, I'll see if I can get one together, although, the last time I did something like this it took me two weeks to prepare, it was very fulfilling though.

Re: Electronic music open nights
I've done three so far and I have to say it's such fun! Many different styles, from the modular types, to laptop only, to hand-built circuit bent noise gadgets and soundboxes, to synthwave and so on. Anything goes as long as it's vaguely electronic, i.e. no singer-songwriters with acoustic guitars. Always seems very democratic, supportive and decent standard.

Re: Electronic music open nights
That’s what got me a bit, say if I wanted use a descant recorder through my modular? But joking aside, yes, it is good, and I'd like to start one in my area.
I was heavily into free-improv, great times, but the same philosophy prevailed, and in the end the closed shop attitude got me and I lost interest, but I learnt a lot that has stayed with me all my life.
But with any of these things, the benefits far outweigh the concerns of a few.

One of the seminars at this year's Synthfest was all about EMON, with a few organisers of events in different parts of the country, and four short acts to illustrated the typical variety. I found it fascinating and I can appreciate how much fun it would be and what a dedicated dfollowing it has.

Re: Electronic music open nights
I used a taishogoto through a mega reverb over some electronic backing last time and it went down a storm, so get your recorder out!
The attitude I've found is really non-closed shop, and improv stuff would be great... worth a go!
Re: Electronic music open nights
Yes, I'm going to the one at The Dublin Castle, if I can get a box together I may play something.
What I was saying, and it doesn’t apply in this situation, is that, in the process of trying to get rid of rules, new rules take their place, which is what I found about the improv scene, melodies? chords? what! sacrebleu!

Re: Electronic music open nights
I’ve done a few improv gigs in the last year. I had 1 mic and 1 guitar feed into one of those fancy guitar looper/granular/mutator/ambient pedals out to PA.
I played overtone flutes, sansula (thumb piano) shakers, finger cyms and analog car horn through the pedal. Great fun.
One of the other players had an original Synthi from the late 70s with some kind of membrane keyboard attached.
When you spend most of your time creating music like a hermit it’s a real treat to play with others and have an audience. How freaky is that?

Aren’t you cranky enough already?
What’s wrong with simply flying the kite from the castle tower in a thunderstorm like you used to?
Reliably fallible.

I heard he'd been prosecuted for flying an unlicensed vehicle.

Re: Electronic music open nights
The first time I saw it I went all warm and fuzzy. Just looking at it brought back good memories of high school and electronic music class. We had a Putney to learn on. Many moons ago this was.

We went, all I can say that is vaguely positive, is that I hope they aren’t all like that.
We left after two pieces, I was expecting a vibrant mixed crowd, but it was the usual older "enthusiasts" enthusing.
I didn’t want to go my partner was more keen than I was, but even she was amazed and couldn’t quite figure out what we were doing there, she just said "lets go"
We exited into a stormy wet night in a small town, the whole thing was very depressing.

Balmy August evening KingsX Cross pub the one I went to 2019. Was all sorts there. Triffic night. The standout youth dressed as a new romantic on stage.
Summer a better thyme mebe. Also some places just seem to draw all sorts which makes them lively.

Shouldn’t have gone, I’m sure those there enjoyed it, but it was more like a private home jam between like minded people, than an interesting musical event, for us anyway.
Just had a mail from a friend in Brighton, he went to one, total opposite, he loved it, and he has the same tastes as me, so it’s very region dependent.
