Panic! party music dilemma

Post by Arpangel »

Hosting a New Year party tonight at our house, just had a call, can I rig up some sort of interface system for the music?
I have my Quad pre-power amp, which is fine for normal audio connections, but, in these days of no headphone sockets on mobile phones I’m a bit stuffed, I'll probably have to deal with with USB C, Lightning connectors, and headphone sockets :( how can I accommodate all those into my preamp? I have a spare audio interface with USB and a laptop, could this help somehow?
All I can think of is those with headphone sockets can go through the stereo, and those with anything else will have to go through my MiniRig speaker via Bluetooth, any ideas?

In my cable bag I always keep a USB-C to mini-jack and a Lightning to mini-jack. and a mini jack to 2x1/4" lead and a whole bunch of 1/4" to Phono adaptors for just such an occasion.

I suspect that, unless Currys (who do sell the USB-C and Lightning headphone adaptors) are less than 20 minutes away from you (as of right now 16:35 on Dec 31) , the grand piano will have to suffice.

Spot on! I've managed to dig out a USB C to stereo mini socket adaptor, I may be able to rig up a lightning affair, if I’m lucky.
The piano is taken, by a Polish Folk outfit, I'm keeping well out of it, as a new year listening to The Soaring Tortoise and Lets Paint TV may not go down too well.

Pity you didn't tell me a week ago Tony! I could have made you up just about any connector/adapter known to Audio Man...plus I have an NI KA6 you could have borrowed for the duration.

Now, have you heard of the "day after the day after new years day effect"? No? Well that's when us old 'tronics service techs went back to work and found ourselves knee deep in burned out music centres and hi fi amps.

They start at 9pm you see at 90dBSPL. By 10 bit pissed and level is knocking on 100. At midnight they TRY for 120dB but the rig is red hot by now and gives up.

I guess Quad stuff is more reliable than most but pop the hand on the heat sink from T 2 T!

Sink a few for me!

Have a good one Dave, and don’t worry, I'll a sink a "few" for you :)
Well, our neighbours aren’t that raucous, and my partner is armed with her "vaporiser" so all should be well.

I think we’ll be having one for Hugh too, he certainly deserves a happy new year!

:D

Now where are those adaptors?

They sell them everywhere... but there's rather more to them than some cable, connectors, and solder.... (clue: one end is fully digital, and the other is all analogue)

Cuerva Gold tequila and make sure it's got the worm. They won't even know there is music. Hell, they won't even know where they are. Trust me on this, I'm a budding politician.

"oh what a night!" :D

After my Quad preamp decided to let go of one channel, soldering iron came out, but all was well, about a minute before the first lot arrived, and all was saved when my friend who had all the music presented his android phone that had a headphone socket on it
Video actually exists of me dancing (?) and making funny disco type noises, like
YYYYEEEAAAHHHHHHHHHHH! and YEEEEEAAAAHHHHHH!
I can say without doubt it was thee best party we’ve ever had in this house, it was hard work, but someone had to do it, in particular I found being surrounded by beautiful young women dancing all over the place very stressful, but I managed quit well after a few tequila sunrises (Zukan, would I let you down?)
Along with me, my Quad 405 got very hot, so hot I couldn’t touch it, but, apart from that, it was the best party ever, full stop.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

"Along with me, my Quad 405 got very hot, so hot I couldn’t touch it,"

So, "I did so inform you thusly!"

I seem to recall the 405s could not meet a very stringent external heat rise test? I would assume however that they have some form of thermal shutdown in them? I know the Quad 50E did.

For future ref - was a cheapo Bluetooth receiver not an option?

It keeps music providers in the room so they don’t wander off, leaving the rest of us to listen to their awful “choons” but doesn’t require them to hover over our precious stuff with their colourful drinks.
