What Are Effective Promotion Strategies on Music Streaming Services?

Hi Everyone

What strategies have you found most effective for promoting music on streaming platforms? Are there specific tools or approaches that have particularly helped boost your music’s visibility?

Thanks for any help!

I think that suggests that we're all equally lost in this particular aspect of promotion.
I know some folks here have had some luck with SubmitHub and/or other playlisters. I was going to experiment with them for a release last year but things got in the way. I'm hoping to follow up a bit this year but until then I'm afraid I've got nothing to contribute.

Hire a good publicist - it really makes a difference in my experience if you have someone with personal contacts. I've been chatting recently to a songwriter with a background in PR - while she doesn't know much about the music business yet, I think her knowledge of PR techniques will stand her in good stead.

Back in the "bad old days" all this stuff was done for us, all we had to do was make the music.

Well, it wouldn't be done for me, because the record label I was on folded and no-one else was going to sign me. So yes, bad old days is right. ;)

Still mourning the loss of my 'Jedi Poster" status :)

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

Not Found error here too.

But I can add my experience of SubmitHub in the light of Drews suggestion. What I learned from that is it doesn't work until you pump money into it - and then you have to decide how much you want to spend chasing after 0.001-0.003 quid per stream. My personal threshold for that is very low, in fact, even lower than the streaming rewards. i.e. zero.

The only other things I've found have been scams I'm afraid.

James' advice about a proper publicist is good if you can afford one. You'll know a proper publicist because they will have a strategy which they'll be able to set out before you clearly. If they can't do that - scam.

I think you’ve got to promote outside of the streaming services with links to them i.e. your own website with a good dose of SEO planning in the descriptive text (and lyrics if applicable), tag photographs with relevant text too (not IMG 1234) YouTube (with embedded lyrics) and social media.
Keep posting/updating regularly with information about upcoming releases, gigs if you’re gigging and maybe early versions and work in progress of tracks.

Apart from SubmitHub.com I should add https://groover.co/ which is pretty good if you are looking for expanding your audience or reach out to specific group, e.g. music supervisors, sync agencies etc

This is how I landed my recent sync deal using the above website.

Good luck!

What are you hoping to get out of streaming? If it's a decent income, then I'm afraid you are probably going to be disappointed. For the vast majority of artists by the time they start making useful money out of streaming they are making far more for other sources.

My band has been able to up our streaming numbers through successful networking on social media, making "friends" with people who put together popular playlists. It helps that we fit into a couple of niche genres with dedicated and passionate fans and we have been able to use the subject matter of some of our songs to target themed playlists, one of which has seen the number of streams per year for our most popular song increase almost 10-fold in the last 12 months.

Even with all of that we've only made £100 out of streaming in 2024.

We look at streaming as promotion for our other activities which may also make us a small amount of money. Our gig fees plus the sale of merchandise (mostly T-shirts) and PRS royalties is where we make most of our money. None of it is enough for us to give up our day jobs but the band is now self-financing in that for the past year, our income covers our costs.

100% correct!

If I am honest with you, the most money I have made so far is from playing live shows, which I organise myself.
