Wish Uli would do a BS1R though. With larger patch memory and USB. I do love my FS1R but if ever there was a unique synth worth cloning, this would be it. Still nothing to touch it, there's no plugin that emulates it. Still that is a sweet looking synth isn't it?. Hope it actually makes it into production.

doubtfull. Its software in a box. Such was the style at the time.
Maybe a VST is possible.

Modifying >2000 parameters with a 1" LCD, some "system reset" style buttons & 4 knobs is not a pleasant user interface.

Theres also {alledgedly :shifty: } a subtext to the FS1r, that it enabled an extension to the FM patents as a forerunner to FM-X.
That was about 25 years ago, so who knows ?

Good sounds though !

The Linn Drum

according to Alex Ball's utube on "The Synths Behind Don't You Want Me"

the samples on the Linn Drum wern't particularly trimmed, giving a slight delay at the start.

=The Linn drum can be a bit cool & play slightly behind the beat !

What a tortuous (yet worthy) recreation!

DAWs make so many things a doddle compared to the 'old ways'.

I had an FS1R, sold it, too awkward to program, a friend still has one, he never uses it, same reason. Nice sounds though.

Great video :geek: I did this long ago because it was 'the way" and even had fun at times, but I don't have the patience now. The best part of the video to me is it shows how important a good arrangement is to a song!

I just saw that B dropped a video of the RD-78.

This one might have hit the chink in my drum machine armour... :D

Owned a real CR78 for a few years. I can't say I was massively impressed. I think maybe the hype had made me expect more than I actually got.

You have to love those cheesy sounds for it to make sense. I absolutely adore the kick, snare and tambourine on the CR-78. I've used it on many tracks.

Oh heavens yes, but there is an good pc based editor that makes it really easy to program. Doing it from the front panel is like keyhole surgery!

Behringer should make a Jen SX1000. I remember when they were listed in the catalogue but can't remember which one - it was either Argos, Gratton or Kays catalogue.

I literally have all the Roland drum machine samples. When I was working on their VP 9000, they dropped all their drum SF2s on me. Do I use them? The only TR sounds I use regularly are from the 808/909/7 series.

Amazing synth, especially with the formant filters. But yes, an utter pain to program from the front panel and gazillion menu options. Sounddiver used to work for software based editing and I had an FS1R editor as well but can't remember the name. Nowadays I use Dexed and Falcon for all FM duties.

Ah, yes, you mean that update to include the CR-78 sounds that they added just after I sold my TR-8S? I was soooo happy about that one!:madas:

Wow! :o

I'd say my most used machine samples are the TR-808 and CR-78.

I have the contempt of familiarity for the TR-707, having used one for many years. I was no fan of the 'slapping a fish against a cardboard box' kick, especially.

The CR78 has had it's day, it’s way too stereotyped now, even more than anything else, and trying to think of new ways and contexts to use it in is difficult. Plus, any vintage home organ with a built it rhythm box will take you to the same place.

I'd agree about the over-use of the Roland drum sounds. I'm in the process of re-doing my band's cover of Enola Gay replacing all the CR78 and TR808 samples (it appears to be a mixture of the two) with a custom pattern using Casio VL-Tone sounds.

I think that when you relinquished the hardware you lost your rights :) !

Another example of that is the free TR8s synth editor & librarian which will only work with hardware attached.
That seems crazy as browsing the editor is a very quick & efficient way of assessing the TR8s's capabilities.

It's not about using them in isolation. It's about blending them in with other sounds. It's what you *do* with it that counts, and it does wonderful things for me. I doubt most people (even the seasoned ones here) would reliably be able to tell when I had CR-78 sounds in a mix, but if it wasn't there you'd miss it.

I've had plenty of 'home organ' rhythm boxes through my hands. None of them have the charm of a CR-78. Either you can hear it, or you can't.

Once upon a time I cared a lot about having the exact character of a sound, it had to be the right thing, but now I don’t, it can be anything, if it takes me to the right place emotionally that’s good enough for me.
Been thinking about this whole situation, I used to love exploring gear, looking for ways that "it" could inspire me, let the gear suggest ideas, and that’s what got me into using electronics in music, but now the inspiration comes from me, the gear no longer has the importance it used to have, as long as it's vaguely OK I'm happy. To work this way you have to rely on your technique, but that doesn’t mean you have to be a Daniel Barenboim or a Chick Corea, for me it's finding a niche, that my very limited technique can exploit.
Gear is receding, to the point where its almost irrelevant to me lately, I guess one day I won’t feel the need to do anything, I'll be happy just listening.

Eek! It's been over a month! Time to resurrect, with a piece of lovely, cynical marketing by Behringer.
https://www.behringer.com/behringer/pro ... e=0722-ACK

The ALL-NEW Behringer Deepmind 12X, 6X and 12XD series has arrived!

What is this innovation, the next-generation development of the Deepmind?

A paint job. As far as I can see, that's it.

Image

Image

Actually, I really like it. As an owner of the original 12D, I am a bit jealous, because it is exactly what I would have done if I were in charge of the graphics. I like hardware synths that graphically 'shout' what the various control sections are and, of course, this is part of the visual attraction of the original Jupiters and Junos (together with the sliders). So after all previous marketing and discussion about Deepmind being inspired by - and not a clone - of the Junos, this is a more obvious attempt to position them as Juno look- and sound-alikes.

I think its great. If I could choose between the 12 black/charcoal colour scheme and the 12X blue/red/charcoal colour scheme, I would definitely go for the latter. As it is , I'll make do with my lovely second-hand 12D, still a great synth.
