Reconnecting synths after studio tear down
Reconnecting synths after studio tear down
Currently looking at a lonely patch panel SEM after taking most of my studio apart so the leaking radiator can get fixed. Unplugging everything and reconnecting everything should be fine. Have labelled every power adapter and popped the cables all in a nice new storage box.
And taken a million picture of what was plugged in where on the mixer.
But suspect the problems will come when I need to get synths and drum machines to work and talk to each other again. Any one got any tips after anything similar?

When I did it (
), I labelled all synths (stereo outputs included L & R), all sockets and PSUs (cause they all look the same
), drew a wiring schematic to inputs on AI.
All midi and usb cables were marked too, and I put them back one at a time testing as I went.
Just take your time and label everything!
I had one cable where a marker came off but it was obvious where it went at the end!
Good luck
Ian.

So long as everything was properly labelled you should be fine.
In the 90s I was in a band that took most of our studio to gigs. I'd spend the evening before dismantling everything and packing it up and then a second evening afterwards the reassembling everything ready for the next round of rehearsing, writing and recording. It helped that most of the gear was in 19" rack cases and all the interconnections were made with clearly labelled patch panels and leads.

Well thanks both. Seems like I have done all I can.. Think the thought of pulling it apart [and then putting it back together later] was more stressful than getting on and doing it.

I'd just add: be methodical when you reconnect stuff and test everything as you go along. That way if you do find you've introduced a problem (like a ground loop or some other source of noise) you'll know exactly what the cause is and be able to troubleshoot it directly.

I'll be sure to do that, thanks. Had already decide to stagger the reintroduction of a couple of Elektron boxes [and perhaps a couple of keyboards] so that will probably help.

I'm in a similar position. My studio was recently flooded with water and I've been moved into temporary accommodation for a year by my insurer.
The course I've taken is connecting the minimal amount of kit. Then I plan to add instruments & effects processors into the equation if and when I need them. I'm currently only using about 30% of my equipment.
Good luck with hooking it all up!

That sounds horrendous. Hope it all ends soon and works out.

And while you're testing as you go, don't cut corners like I did and connect stuff that is live - I killed a (fortunately not expensive) pedal that way. Keep turned off to connect. turn on, test, turn off.

Did the rebuild happen yet, [edit] Jay?
Since I don't have a dedicated space for music-making, tearing down and rebuilding is a weekly occurence in Casa Asaro!

But your output is phenomenal and the quality mind blowing!
