Pedal into Hi-Z question.

Post by Dynamic Mike »

I've just purchased & set up the SSL 2+ Mark II which has 2 Neutrik XLR Combo sockets for Mic/Line inputs mounted on the rear. Purely for convenience is it okay to plug the line outs from my Pod Go into the Hi-Z instrument sockets on the front just for monitoring when practicing (not when recording) to save constantly having to unplug/plug the mics? The DI inputs automatically disconect the XLR inputs when they detect a connection.

I thought it best to ask before trying it out in case it might cause any damage.

Why do bad things mostly seem to happen to people who light up a room when they enter it?

Yes, you won't do damage. Use your ears to set the gain so that the inputs are not distorting.

Still mourning the loss of my 'Jedi Poster" status :)

People often mistake me for a grown-up because of my age.

I can't find anything on the Line 6 page giving the actual specifications of output levels for the Pod Go, but you should be fine with plugging it into the Hi-Z inputs without causing any damage, just listen for any overloading as the front inputs on the SSL have a max level 9dB lower than the line inputs on the rear.

[EDIT - Sam beat me to it]

Thanks guys, I figured it would probably be okay because people use pedals directly before the instrument input into a guitar amp. But now I feel reassured I won't cause any damage by trying it. I'll start with the pod go volume fairly low and see how it sounds.

Since you are doing this purely for convenience when monitoring certainly not a problem but people should be aware that some high Z inputs on AIs (and a few mixers) are deliberately made to have some "attitude".

The makers of them boast of a "musical discrete FET input" which is "distortion" in engineering terms!

Some folks will of course like the 'hair' that such inputs deliver but I prefer to have as transparent a device as I can get. I am quite capable of buggering up the sound post tracking thank you very much!

I think the 4K button switches the 'SSL Attitude' in and out as required. I don't know whether it works on the instrument inputs though as they seem to bypass any other processing. Won't really know until I try it.
