USB recorder?

Post by Lizardpoint »

Evening all,
I am looking for a 2 channel device that will take a line level input and record either wav or mp3 format files to a removable USB drive.
I’ve had a look and can’t find anything. Compact flash, SD cards but not USB drives. Does such a beast exist or did I dream it ?
Cheers

A cheap SD-USB adapter would allow you to record to SD cards and then read/copy them to a computer just as you would a USB stick. USB sticks are not ideal as recording media simply because they stick out of the device and so are vulnerable to physical impact/damage while SD cards and similar are more or less fully enclosed in the machine.

USB SD card adaptors are cheap and readily available. Record onto SD, then pop it into one of these.

The Behringer X32 has exactly this, with your USB stick being used to record. But it's not really a portable device. A bit like shooting a mosquito with a bazooka.

And of course the most (if not all?) Zoom handy recorders can be switched into an USB device easily. That's how I use my H4n pro. Record stuff (onto the built-in SD card), connect via USB to computer, transfer WAV files.

Good luck!

Tascam and Denon both make stereo, line-level rack-mount recorders that can record to USB drives (as well as SD cards). Eg:

This (and not just Zoom of course, Tascam and Olympus devices all work this way) plus using an SD card -> USB adapter are both viable and easy ways of accomplishing what you want.

Apart from Hugh I suspect we have all assumed you are looking for a portable device? If not then Hugh's rackmount suggestions will get the job done. But if you do want something portable then I fear you are out of luck...

This is what occurred to me, go on Temu, eBay, Amazon and what not, and type in 'USB Recorder' - it'll take some time to read though all the products on offer, see you in a month!

Given how bad the search engines on those platforms are I suspect a month won't even scratch the surface...

You'd be better off typing USB AUDIO RECORDER, just to reduce the number of photographic storage devices and their ilk.

The reference to line inputs made me think this was more a fixed location than portable application. Hence the suggestion of rackmount hardware.
