Lexicon is where

Post by mountain lion »

Hi

Can you give me examples of some songs where you know what reverb is being used? I am especially interested in lexicon. That would be very informative. Also what do you think of izotope aurora?

Thank you

Moments in Love by the Art of Noise is a good one. It's a Lexicon 224 being pushed to the limit. Several program changes and sometimes you can hear it mute for a bit between programs, but Gary Langan knows what he's doing "playing" the mixer.

If you do a search on some of the long-running SOS interview columns, you should find lots of references to Lexicon reverbs being used. Eg I just typed this, including the quotation marks, into the Google search bar:

"lexicon" "secrets of the mix engineers" site:soundonsound.com

...and there were loads of results of tracks by famous engineers/producers. And the same thing with "Classic Tracks".

(Though, of course, Lexicon units might not have been the only reverbs used on those tracks!)

A lot of the early Vangelis stuff used the Lexicon 224, I think maybe the Blade Runner score too.

PS, just downloaded Rc 24, it's not bad, not really like a real 224 but it has some nice qualities, it's not as dirty as a real thing and it sounds just a bit synthetic, but forget all that, it gives the same vibe, plus it has this lovely way of emphasising harmonics, weird, but nice!
Thank's for the thumbs-up, I think I'll buy it.

Double PS, just thought I'd download the UAD 224 for a comparison, oh dear, not only is the UA website so slow, unbearably so, the download won't connect! Apparently this is quite common now, oh well, my first experience with UAD and it maybe the last! So easy to download Sc 224, incredible.

Triple PS! Phew! It's now working after creating an iLock account, verdict?
Yes, it’s closer to a 224 than the Rc 24, it's dirtier, and nails the character more than the NI, I like the Rc 24 as it is though, as a reverb in its own right, but the UA is definitely closer to the sound of the original, no doubt about it, and as a former owner of an original 224 I'm happy to say that.

The UA 224 uses the actual Lexicon 224 code - I use it all the time and never had an issue with their site, but they can be big file downloads relatively speaking.

Yes Bob, I’m glad I got a chance to listen to the UA, it's actually very much spot on.

Whilst I use it because I like it, and have never heard an original, that’s still somewhat comforting…..

All I can go on is my ageing memory! but yes, the UA has got this dirty decay on the reverb tails, thats the first thing I noticed on my original 224, that's what gives it that beautiful deep distant sound. I'd love my old one back, but the fan was like a hoover, I had to put it outside in the hallway on a long extension for the remote, ad to that unreliability, forget it.

Never owned a 480, a friend has a 960, and I've used that for piano recording, all I can say is that it's so natural you don’t even think about it.

I have the UAD Lexicon 480 plug-in, but rarely use it. The 224 Small Hall gets used a lot……….. there’s something about its character that I really like on many sources. For cleaner reverb I go for the EMT 140 Plate and for over the top, I start with the Blackhole……..

Bob, have you tried the Valhalla VintageVerb? that's very good, versatile, I use that quite often.

Listen to 80s US rock and UK pop and you'll find a Lex in there somewhere.

I loved just about every PCM version they made. But they weren't the only beasts of the day. TC, Sony, Eventide etc all played their part but in terms of popularity, nothing came near the Lexicons......and don't start me on the 480 and 960. I don't want to go there.

The only Lex emulation I like and use, even though it's not marketed as such, is Softube's Tsar-1. Other than that, if I want the whole tail thing, I use Exponential Audio's verbs.

And don't forget the AMS RMX non-linear setting if you want that typical 80s drum sound.

No.
Don't know what it is, but I always skip through any gated presets in things I use, never listen to them, it's like couscous, or women with tattoos, there’s not one reason I should pay them any attention, I’m not being verbist, foodist, or sexist, it's just a built in thing, for me personally.

I did download Rc 24 and I like it, it’s a great reverb as it stands.
But I've always been a fan of NI reverbs, I can remember when I first got Reaktor, the reverbs in that blew me away, but I was used to Boss and Alesis stuff at the time so that wasn’t exactly difficult.
