2 button mouse

Post by The Paul meister »

My new iMac shipped with a single button mouse. I'm using my 2 button one which I had for my old iMac. It uses a USB A adapter. You can get a USB C to A adapter online. The mouse is available here:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Slim+Re ... nt=gws-wiz

I like these ones because they have a cool glow to them. I think most of them have a rechargeable battery and come with a USB A charging cable.

I find the 2 button mouse is so much better for various things. The right click gives you options in Finder, for example right clicking on an icon for 'Get Info'. And in Logic, you can right click in the tracks plane to insert a new track and other options. There are other things as well - can't remember them all off the top of my head.

Also the mice I recommended above have a scroll wheel. The one button mouse has a touch scroll wheel system. I think I prefer the one on the two button mouse.

Cheers, Paul

If by "single button mouse" you mean the Apple Magic Mouse, it is two button. You just need to set it up for 2-button operation in the Mouse Preferences.

Also I find the touch scrolling of the Magic Mouse far more reliable than any mechanical wheel system, which normally dies on me within 12 months.

I guess if you get on with the magic mouse it's a thing of beauty. If you don't, and I didn't, it's horrible! I was always inadvertently touching the sensitive surface and having unexpected and unwanted things happening. I returned to a normal Logica mouse with a big sigh of relief. Magic mice can be sold for a useful sum on ebay.

I wonder why the Magic Mouse isn't automatically set up in 2 button mode?

Much as I like the look of the magic mouse, maybe like you like the look of your glowing mouse, it is a tool and so I go for optimum performance.

I use the Logitech MX Master 3S and have it set up to perform multiple tasks in Logic using key commands and the Logitech app and I find it a real timesaver.

Historically the various Apple's Operating Systems have developed using a single button mouse with keyboard modifiers. For users like myself who are slightly dyslexic/dyspraxic this arrangement is a lot easier to navigate. Two button operation is mostly for the benefit of attracting Windows users who are used to this way of working. Although my Magic Mouse is set up for two button operation, that's only because there are some applications I use where a few essential commands appear to be unavailable by any other means. For me, for standard menu commands, the mouse is rarely used and everything is driven from the keyboard, which is even faster.

Didn't Genesis have a song about that on "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway"?

Himmm. All mine are ball-less 3 button with scroll wheel. I use all the features so would find anything else limiting.

I have the Logitech MX Ergo which is a trackball mouse with multiple buttons and a scroll wheel with an additional button press. With an ultra wide monitor I can spin the ball at high speed and zip from one side of the screen to the other. It has a button for ultra fine movement too. I use it combined with a Nob control and it is so much faster than using a Magic Mouse - which I do have but don’t like. The trackpad is useful for scrolling and zooming too. I wouldn’t go back to a mouse after a trackball.

I got one of those mice just yesterday so still getting used to it. Not cheap but very well made, I've customised it for normal use and will be doing the Logic customisation later. So far it's quite impressive.

I should add that the MX Master 3S has quite a collection of wheels and buttons scattered over its surface which can be customised both for normal use and specifically by application.

Out of curiosity, Bob, what Logic keypesses etc did you put on the mouse?

Hello Chris

I have it set up as follows:

Right click: Tool Menu
Thumb wheel up: Horizontal Zoom Out
Thumb wheel down: Horizontal Zoom In
Top wheel forward: Scroll Down
Top wheel backward: Scroll up
Top wheel button: Option
THEN by setting up Key Commands in Logic accordingly........
Pressed Top Wheel Forward: Vertical Zoom In
Pressed Top Wheel Back: Vertical Zoom Out
Front side button: Option
Back side button: Space bar
Thumb Button: Undo

So much of it to do with navigation around the arrange page.

That's interesting, Bob, thank you. A few of those (e.g. undo, zoom in and out) I have as buttons on my MCU but I can see the use of the others. Splendid!

.......and of course after a short while they become second nature, following which if you don't have them for any reason, you struggle to cope with going back to the old way of working!
