Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
To anyone that can help.. I have a spent a few hours on this and cannot figure out... I was trying to get the send and return effects buses setup with the newly received OR2 96 mixer. First time I am using digital mixer this type for the studio.
With that stated, in the process, I did something with Channel 1 and cannot hear the Stereo output signal, but you can see the green light input cahnnel signal at the top coming in...
Another details is that when trying to get effects heard on channel one, I got some reverb feedback playing wiht the Auxes to route the signal. At one time, I did get a higher frequency screach before lowering the channel. I hope I did not break any electronics.. but since I am receiving the signal from the input, i think it is a routing problem with software and maybe with the effects setup...
I would appreciate any debug steps to figure this out... I am still reveiwing Youtube clips and reading the manuyal, but cannot figure this out... I do have other channels I can simply use, but it is a shame to not have channel 1 working...
Thanks,
Takis

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
So, first we need to do a little trouble shooting to confirm what is where and how things are configured..
1: You confirm that there's signal present at the analogue stage as the green LED near the gain control is lit when you apply signal. We know signal has got this far.
2: You don't state whether the mixer has a meter bridge so assuming it has, does signal show on there? If a meter bridge isn't fitted, you can press the 'meter' button and that will scroll through several pages giving a bar graph representation of the various I/O levels.
If you see no signal, don't panic - go to the the 'input patch' page and confirm you have CH1 routed from AD1 as any input can be routed to any channel. If this is correctly routed but you still have no signal then you may have A/D conversion problems.
2a: If you have signal present as stated above, to get it out of the mixer (dry), check it's routed to 'stereo' as I'm assuming buses 1-8 aren't configured to work as audio subgroups.
3: Assuming signal is present and correct to this point, we need to check the FX routing page. By default the 4 FX sends are routed from Auxes 1-4 then returned as 4 stereo pairs on channels 49-56. Akso check these channels are routed to 'stereo'.
4: On CH1 you'll need to confirm that the pre/post configuration is correct and that the send is switched on as again, each channel can be altered separately.
5: Make sure the Aux master faders are switched on and the they are up. You can confirm signal at the Aux master either by checking the meter bridge / meter page or solo the selected aux and check with headphones.
It sounds to me like you have a feedback loop due to a configuration problem so review these steps and see how far you get.

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
My friend.. thank you very much for taking the time to itemize these steps!!!!
I cannot see your response as I am typing this, but I understand your great explanation... I will now go through your steps.. I just had to thank you really quick for the advice.. After reading your debug steps, I think something is going on at step 4 with the A/D conversion... I am not seeing a signal there, which I noticed initially... so, let me start there, and I will let you know later on this evening the issue may be... Also, if I get that working, I am pretty sure it is the effects routing issue with channel 48-52 ?? returns.... I am sure this debug situation that you are helping me with will assist someone in the future. I will post soon with the results!!! Thanks Taki

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Figured it out with your great debug help.. The issue was the routing.. In the process of trying to route my effects to the Aux Sends and the returns to Channels 49-56, I messed up with the AD routing as you astutely pointed out in step 2..
'If you see no signal, don't panic - go to the the 'input patch' page and confirm you have CH1 routed from AD1 as any input can be routed to any channel. If this is correctly routed but you still have no signal then you may have A/D conversion problems.'
As I mentioned, this was a used unit.. even though I recalled Scene memory 0, it seems like it does not 'reset' these values....
Now, since I lowered all AUXes and Returns to figure out again how to route reverb into the channel... I think you address it in steps 3-5...
I am falling in love with this unit, but not there yet.... it is difficult to understand the routing and the way to do with all the pages being layered... but this is one the reasons why i bought this unit to get better trained with these new digital boards...
Thanks again for your help...
And it I may ask a little more from you if you can answer.... what is the best incremental step in routing say reverb 3 that is on default AUX 3 channel to no channel 1 inputs sound and to rout to both the direct out going to the DAW and to the stereo outs that go to the main house speakers, per say?
Thanks.. Takis

OK my friend.. I noticed your icon.. My neighbor is Steve Dolan, I live in UT.. but from what he has told me and what I have seen, he is one of the relics still around and riding with these type of motorcycles.. I figure I mention it.. He is 70 or over and still rides.. he is one of the very well known riders in the this sport at least in California, Nevada, and Utah.... He is a great individual too.... just like you my friend.... I hope Steve does not mind this plug....
Next, I just donated a few bucks to this site.. I noticed it was in British pounds but none the less, all of us musicians/sound guys live in an implied country... thanks to you and this website... I will try to contribute more as I become more knowledgeable with this Yamaha OR2 unit....
Last, I figured out step by step to setup the effect... the manual is a few hundred pages long.. and there is no step by step way to explain these examples.... So here is how I did it.. Please correct me or adjust my approach if there is a better way - that is for anyone...
'How to setup Effects to a Channel with the OR296' (placed here for easy search of issue)
1) Notice that there are 4 effects.... chose one to deal with.... I happened to chose Effects 3 since it was working by mistake before.... So in the press the diamond button in the upper left hand side of the OR2 96 (probably different for other OR2 models) and then you will see how the 4 effects are routed...
2) Then on the left hand side for Effects 3 place AUX 3 - this is the effects send
3) Then using the 'movement buttons' in the lower right corner of the board, go to the right side and place the default return channels 53 and 54
4) Then using the diamond button, select the 'Group' button.. Keep on pressing it until you go to the 'In Master' tab.. there you will see the 8 AUXs levels and if they are on or off... Turn ON the AUX3 button and make sure the level is 90% up - that is where it was defaulted.
5) Then making sure your fader mode (left side of board - center)is in 'FADE' not AUX' chose the MASTER layer button on the right side ot the board - low center - then raise your return channels 53 and 54 for returns to AUX 3 and raise the AUX 3 channel - pay close attention to the grayed out numbers on each channel that identify these channels - you need to get used to these - reading the correct layer values - VERY IMPORTANT to notice... One things I was not paying attention to before...
6) Final step is to now swath the FADER button to AUX on the left hand center side - this is where we place how much effects 3 to each fader instrument channel.. so if you want reverb on channel 1, while in this AUX layer mode you raise the fader while playing your instrument and place as much reverb you want... Now this 'how much reverb' depends on many parameters... including your send and return levels and the overall effects settings... I will leave it up to someone else to address this setup issue... but at this time, you should be able to hear the effect with your instrument.. If you do not, then go back and review the steps...
I think I got everything correct.. please confirm or alter any of my steps.. and like I stated, if there is an easier way in doing this setup, please respond. Thanks again for the help, and I will continue to keep in touch with this website.. learn and hopefully contribute with sound advice whenever I can!

Hi Takis, glad you're getting there with the Yamaha - it's a pretty steep learning curve..
I don't have time for a detailed response right now, however, I will come back to you soon.

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Takis, hoping you see this - how are you getting along with the Yamaha? I figured it's been a few weeks so expect you're finding things a little easier and the console is making a little more sense by now?
Having used the DM2000 for a long while now, lots of things almost instantly made sense on the 02R96 but one thing I personally found was making use of the user assignable buttons and knobs. This helped speed up regularly used functions considerably - mute grouped fx returns, knobs assigned to control the 'other' layer etc. The version 2 / VCM software has more options but even V1 has plenty to be made use of.
As for the little Honda, it's long gone, sadly - I had a rather serious incident in some terrible weather a number of years ago. I still ride today albeit on an equally vintage Yamaha FJ - I've love of these old things and have clocked so many miles in both the UK and Europe on them.

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Just been 'gifted' a V2 O2R in mostly good shape thats going to become my bench test and routing mixer for the shop- it's got a CD8-AD-S in slot 2 and a CD8-AD in slot one, for 32 ins total... Am i correct in assuming that the 16 additional inputs default to the Tape Returns and cannot be changed? ie: it's a 16ch inline console and that's that?
The additional 8 outs will probably be set to busses, so I can get 14 outputs for various routing features.
I've got a set of 2.16 ROMS ordered as this is 2.05 i believe. Going to try to find a meter bridge for a good price as well, but that's less necessary for me in this application!

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Yes, the card positions and input channel routing are somewhat limited. They aren't like the newer Yamaha consoles where the the slot positions don't hugely matter as any input / output can come from / go to anywhere.
Card inputs in slots 1 & 2 only route to 'tape inputs' 1-8 and 9-16 respectively.
Card outputs for slots 1 & 2 default to direct outs from internal inputs or cards in slots 3 & 4 ie primary layer 1-16.
Card inputs in slots 3 & 4 only route to primary layer 1-8 and 9-16 respectively.
Card outputs for slots 3 & 4 can be used to route Aux and Bus outputs.
Whilst the above are fixed, the positions within the banks of eight aren't restricted 1-1, they cab be changed (eg 3-5) but not cross card (5-12 for example). With the v 2.16 chips, there's an additional 8 inputs available via the unity card but again, those inputs are fixed. The stereo inputs (17-24) on the primary layer can't be routed to the direct outs but can be sent to any aux and assigned to any of the 8 sub groups.
I'm sorry this seems so horribly garbled but I hope you get what you need from it.

Yes that makes sense, and is largely what i suspected. I know the 8 outs on the slot one i can also use as buss or aux outs- which is fine, as I'm not planning to record with this (though i do have a full 24ch 888/24 Mix system and I suppose i could set it up and we could really party like it's 1999!)

Best of luck with the Yamaha - I'm sure how ever you choose to use it, it'll simply get on with it.
And yes, I'd happily party like it was 1999!

02r96 Y56K by VTypeV4, on FlickrBack in the land of the 02R, this Waves Y56K / ADAT card arrived safely from Japan this morning. Thankfully I encountered no issues during installation and chose to make various Renaissance EQ and Compressor strings as stereo sub-group inserts.
I've had good service out of these cards as there's one in both DM2000s, too. As I've probably mentioned previously, the sounds of the plugins are a little different - arguably, they have a little more character than the stock Yamaha ones. Both the 02R96 and especially the DM2Ks have more than enough processing to do pretty much every job that comes my way but the extra bells and whistles afforded by the Waves card is very welcome.

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Hello Everyone... Busy working.. but something happened to my O2R96 Setup which I cannot figure out.. I read the manual.. did a ChatGPT and everything I think that is correct was validated...
My issue is this... Out of the 8 direct outs that were all working in the past, now only direct 2 out is working. I did have the issue that is on this thread concerning the setup of effects and using Aux outputs.. but the Direct Outs should have nothing to do with Aux or Bus outputs, I read and would make sense.
I have checked all hardware including cables and everything is working. This seems to be simply an O2R issue.. I think...
So, any suggestions are appreciated.. and below is the ChatGPT response for reference..
Thanks in advance.. Again, I hope it is an easy fix, as was the effects .....
Takis
STEP 1: Understand the Limitations
The O2R96 does not have a dedicated "direct out" per channel in the analog sense.
However, you can emulate direct outs by assigning channel signals to aux sends, buses, or omni outs.
STEP 2: Choose AUX Sends for Direct Out
Press the [AUX] button to access aux settings.
Choose Pre-Fader, Pre-EQ for the aux sends if you want true "direct out" behavior (i.e., unaffected by fader or EQ changes).
Press [SEL] on the desired channel.
Press [AUX SEND].
Use the FADER MODE buttons to set the desired Pre settings.

STEP 3: Patch AUX Sends to Outputs
Press [PATCH] to open the routing screen.
Navigate to the OMNI OUT or Slot Outputs tab depending on your output hardware (analog outs or digital slots like ADAT, AES, etc.).
Assign the AUX SENDs (e.g., AUX1–AUX8) to specific physical outputs:
OMNI OUT 1 → AUX1
OMNI OUT 2 → AUX2
…and so on.
STEP 4: Set AUX Send Levels for Each Channel
Press [SEL] on each input channel.
Go to the AUX SEND layer.
Use the faders to send the channel signal to the appropriate AUX.
For example: Channel 1 → AUX1 (direct out to OMNI OUT 1)
Channel 2 → AUX2 (direct out to OMNI OUT 2)
Example: Channel 1 to Direct Out 1
Set AUX1 as Pre-Fader, Pre-EQ on Channel 1.
Send Channel 1 to AUX1 at unity gain.
Route AUX1 to OMNI OUT 1.
You now have a "direct out" from Channel 1 to OMNI OUT 1.

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Well, even though it may be annoying to leave such a long post with the issue... It helped me to figure it out.. it was what I suspected, similar to the effects issue where I needed to strike the Master button to rise the AUX buses for the effect..
BUT for the direct outs, you need to raise all 8 BUSes for the signals to go out - obviously, I only had BUS 2 raised, thus for my perplexing issue... Now when I stuck the Master buttom wiohtin the Layer section, and then raised all 8 BUS channel aka 17-24 on the stirp.. also labelled in a dimmer thrid row BUS channel.. everything is working...
What happed I think is due to my debuging of the effects issue, I lowered/altered the BUS channels...
So, the moral to this DEBUG issue is that AUX channels are for effects (and other tasks) and the BUS channel are for the Direct outs...
I hpe this helps someone.. and feel free to add any more advice.
Thanks,
Takis

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
OK Another small problem.. Do not know if it is actual used O2R or if it is something else.. again concerning the Direct OUtTs...
Only on Channel input 1 DIRECTO OUT 1 works... all other input channels I tested out from 2-13 - when I select DIRECT 1 out button.. nothing.. but for all other DIRECT OUTs, no matter the input channel.. they all send out a signal...
I am hoping this is also a setup issue, if someone can suggest any advice to investigate/resolve.
Thanks,
Taki

Re: Yamaha 02R digital mixing console.
Takis, did you get to the bottom of this? Sounds like a configuration issue to me - check your output patching as each direct out needs a separate output assigned per per card.
For example:
Channel One - Direct out: Slot 1 / 1
Channel Two - Direct out: Slot 1 / 2
Channel Three - Direct out: Slot 1 / 3 etc..
Check your cards output capabilities, too. Most cards have 8 outs although some are four and others 16 or more - the start of the card name denotes this number such as MY8-AT or MY4-AD.

The 02R96 working along side Mark's Behringer Wing - I did the band and he did all of the head-set and hand-helds.
I've done more than a few jobs with the newer 02R and it's done exactly what's asked of it - no fuss or drama.

VtypeV4.. thanks for the follow up!!! I have not recorded in my studio for a while... but, I think I figured this out and got things to work, but I do not recall how I fixed it... I will check soon again.. make sure it works, and I hope I recall what it was... Thanks again for your 'free consultin'!
