Which recorder: Recording spoken word w external pre-amp & mic

Post by R_A »

Which recorder would you buy for this scenario:

Recording spoken word. Signal chain will be a CAD M179 microphone into a Cranborne Audio Camden EC1 preamp into the recorder.

Can be mains powered or battery powered.

Price point under GBP 360.

Are the analogue to digital convertors superior in any models on the market?

Thank you.

I'd probably choose the Zoom F3. £250 ish Run it from a mains adapter.

The Tascam FR-AV2 has better preamps for £100 more, but you won't need that benefit if you're always using the EC1.

...but if you're ever likely to want to record out and about the Tascam might be a better option.

Both can record 24bit fixed point or 32bit floating point. Both have quiet line inputs with +24dBu capability, and both have good converters supporting standard, double and quad sample rates.

Thank you. Those both look like perfect suggestions.

I will report back in three months or so to let other know how I got on with the FR-AV2 or F3.
