A Nod to Another Tune

Post by OneWorld »

This is my first Cubase 14 tune, and it can be seen there's a nod to another tune, but that's the whole point of, though, I haven't copied chords, melody and only a phrase in common parlance. Is it too close to another song happen? I wouldn't say so

https://www.reverbnation.com/control_ro ... 6795/songs

It is Song 1. How Are Things

I tried to put this on Sooundcloud but what a hotch potch that site is these days, I gave up.

Perfectly happy to give it a listen mate - but not at all happy with Reverbnation's data protection expectations on my personal data I'm afraid. If you can get it on some sharing space as an mp3 maybe? But akso, Soundcloud is fine if you decline the new upload format - it still lets you do that, last time I used it anyway.

I'm at one with you on that, and I was ignorant of the setup. AFAIK. anyone wanting to listen to a tune simply went to the site and selected the tune. Anyway, thanks for letting me know. I'll bung it on YouTube. let's hope they at least remain open to all

Whereas I did sign up to Reverbnation years ago but now it doesn't seem to let me reset my password.
The SoundCloud upload change is a great example of taking something that worked absolutely fine and making it worse for absolutely no benefit.

Agreed. The best way, I found, is to just upload and save and then go back and do the metadata as an edit. They haven't butchered the edit an existing track screens yet.

I've mentally bookmarked this for a listen once YouTube (or a.n.other link that doesn't need a signup) is active

I have form on this subject. I was one of the early adopters of MySpace, which was so intuitive and simple, even an aging chap with the forlorn belief I could have a hobby hit, could work it out. And then Murdoch bought it and 'improved' it, what a dog's dinner that was - I lost everything. And it was like playing chess with a grand master to try and make use of the site. And tyhen BookFace came along, MySpace was finished.

And now the alternatives, Soundcloud, Reverbnation, going down the same route. I liked ReverbN because of it's simplicity and open access, well I can kiss goodbye to that. I do sign up to these sites with a thought to becoming a paying user, but I am not shelling out yet more money for products where it becomes like pulling teeth to use the thing.

Ironically, faced with all this perplexing uploadary, the tune that my tune makes a nod to is....................
wait for it........
yep................."Things Can Only Get Better" - I wish :bouncy:

Here it s, my first Cubase 14 effort, and my first pop video. I used the freeware Openshot, but what a grueller of a job that was, I just couldn't get it to work. Then I discovered the version of OpenShot I had, had a bug in it. I Downloaded the latest version and I had the video boxed off in 15 minutes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBIYwHJFhTU

I was hoping to be able to use a video of some shuffle dancer(s) but couldn't find any free ones (videos, not shuffle dancers!) Then I found free to use video clip sites and this is what I came up with, whole video took about 30 mins. I had tried an AI generated alternative, but it was risable, the 'singers' lip movements looked like a goldfish out of its bowl.

The song is a reference to a well known hit, and my tune is sort of a revisit to way back when and inspired by an interview I watched on TV just recently when the same old mantra was being trotted out, and the interviewee dodging, squirming, phillibustering and extemporizing the irrelevant answers he did give. The song explains it I think and is more about the interview than the song it nods to.

So my effort is not a rip off of the original song, but uses a phrase in the chorus in common parlance, so in my song I am sort of saying "So what's new, we heard it all before, and why don't you answer the question?"

Thanks awjoe, I like the idea of that👍

I am currently working on another tune where I can improve my video editing, now I’ve got the bug for it, though of course the music takes precedence and I am relying on Autotune less to try and get my tuning better

I hope you aren't offended, but it was the audio that I liked - with the exception of the over-the-shoulder keyboard shots, the video snippets seemed flown in and notional more than part of the song. I do videos of my stuff too, and like you, the audio takes precedence. And yet video is at least as important as the music for someone who is watching a video. I recently tried to talk the SOS crew into starting a video forum here - I was hoping for a place where I could ask my dumb questions and get help with basic stuff that would raise my video game a bit - but I didn't get buy-in. I guess there's nothing for it but do my homework and ask my dumb questions elsewhere. I'm just not that into video, is my problem. 🙂

I used to be sort of ambivalent about video, but nowadays it seems to be more and more ubiquitous. Is that because of the proliferation of graphical content sites, or that music has felt a need to be represented graphically. I dunno. I am of a belief that a good song speaks for itself and can get along just fine without a graphical representation. That said, I guess it makes for a more entertaining experience.

This video was my first attempt, that is clear LOL and I am using the song as a bed for the video, but yes, much of it is disjointed. I am limited to using free clips from various libraries, where I don't have to create an account, fill in surveys and have to go through those irritating access portals.

I am not looking forward to the turmoil of learning another complex skill. I enjoy making music, and still learning, and don't want to be distracted by yet another creative endeavour. However in this current song, I have visual ideas forming that I think compliment the music more clearly and I am getting to like the process, does take a lot of time though. I had hoped AI would do it, but I cannot find one that's acceptable or accessible.

Thanks for your comments

In the case of music videos that have the artist(s) playing the tune, I think it's because music is both more natural and more enjoyable when you can see the musicians actually making it. That's how it happens in the real world with live music, right? As for other music videos, I often find them somewhere on the distraction/irritation scale.
