Hmm, an NE5534 driving a 10k input at +22dBu will push about 1.4mA peak into the load so AFAICT is it not straying out of class A?

If course if people are daft enough to insist on 600 Ohm operation!

yet the pictures here

quite clearly show 5532 ICs behind the mic inputs. I also don't remember seeing discrete mic preamps when I had to take my ASP-008 apart to fix it. Yes, they may be using more than just the usual pair of transistors right at the input but the 5532s are doing much of the work. So it appears that Audient think that 5532s count as Class-A discrete op amps! :headbang::headbang:

Oh dear, that IS a damning exposé! :(

I shall now look upon my Audient Mico in a slightly new light ;)

They're good preamps - they've just let their marketing people get a little carried away recently...

Show me a company where that hasn't happened!

But there is so much ignorant fetishistic nonsense about 'class-A' not only in manufacturer's brochures but across the Interweb and especially in the loony hifi brigade.
