Not sure whether this is the right spot to post a compliment to Mr Paul White.

I am a SOS reader since 1998 or so, and Paul has heen “editor in chief” for most of that era. Trigger for my compliment is his article in May 2025 issue: “submarine pickups”, although I do not understand his comment of “ having more effect pedals than you actually need”
But also his “why I love” article (Logic sampler) shows his feel and indeed love for the music making artist, be it professional or serious hobbyist. I like reading his articles, most of the time recognize by the title or subject of the article

Without disparaging the other excellent writers, Paul’s articles often make me a happy man, and looking for more info re the subject from his article. He is my hero 😉😉

Paul doesn't hang around the forums much, but I've let him know your comments are here.

I'll pile on here ... one of my first exposures to music beyond my acoustic piano and CD/vinyl album/FM radio players was a very small white soft cover booklet called, "Effects" (or something like that), by a Mr. Paul White, the effect of which was eye-opening in a "We're not in Kansas anymore" sort of way.

And that's what got me started in making music on computers.

(I'm very grateful, Mr. White, but please, I don't mean to burden you with any responsibility for the resulting slight but non- zero overall diminution of humanity's peace and comfort!).

I'll add that it was Paul that encouraged me to begin writing for SOS (is it that long ago?!), and that he's a genuinely lovely man.

Thanks Hugh, and you are the other that deserve a compliment …
for your excellent articles, describing & explaining often complex and quite technical topics in always clear written papers

If we’re heaping unsolicited praise on SoS here then I’d like to take this opportunity to confess that my personal electromagnetic/mechanical hero is none other than Herr Robjohns! The hyper intelligent and generous teacher/father figure/mentor I never had, but have access to here in these pages *wipes tear from eye*

Your comments are very flattering but really SOS is a team effort and we have a great team here. I'm also in awe of Hugh's technical expertise — even though in a previous life I qualified in electronics he seems to recall stuff that I forget years ago. As an ex pat Yorkshireman I'm always on the lookout for ways to save money and to make new and exciting sounds without the gear or software giving me a headache! I'm still gigging (I've suffered for my music so why shouldn't everyone else?) and also produce music for old hippies with my friend Mark Soden under the name Cydonia Collective. Given that we have about a dozen albums on-line, I could also write an authoritative article on how not to make money from the music business!

I have much thanks to Mr White for his 'piezo drum trigger' article from many years ago, it allowed us to make an electronic kit for my drumming mate. Changed our lives. So brilliant! Allowed us to record drums at home. I knew how good it was when he (with his eyes shut) reached out to grab the cymbal (melamine pizza board covered in mousemat) to stop it ringing.

God bless ya.
