Sony APM-058 Speakers

3WAY SUPER WIDE

Anyone know about these/have experience using them? They're interesting looking that's for sure!

Always on the lookout for cool grotbox / NS10 type situations for monitoring.

Suspect so, I'm in the UK.

Haven't seen speakers like that for years. Back in the 80s I had a Sony hi-fi set of separates that had speakers like that but they were just woof and tweet. The main drivers were flat like that, not cones. I remember their bass reproduction was very good for their size.

They came as part of a 3-part 'boombox', the Sony FH-5 Rather like a low-end hi-fi pseudo-separates system of the time, but with the central section (cassette/Graphic/radio/amp controls) having a handle and running off batteries. The speakers could be detached if it wasn't being carried around on your shoulder, just in case it was ever used as a hi-fi at home.

The FH-7, the most powerful of the three generally similar looking FH-x models. only came with the APM-058 speakers on the MkIII version, the previous ones having two-way speakers, so it might be similar for the FH-5.

Reliably fallible.

Thanks Wonks for the background! Hope someone can chime in with how they sound. Phil?

What’s up with a square woofer and the angles? Do they sound like butt? Are they a secret weapon for mixing vocal sibilants?

Someone save me from getting a pair for cheap locally and finding out the hard way ;)

These speakers are nothing to write home about, they are typical grot box speakers of the time, I heard them many times, a PR exercise, the "Super Wide" refers to the angled tweeter, supposedly to give you a wider image, the flat drivers appeared elsewhere too, not a major benefit either.

I doubt that they are anything special - they were almost certainly designed more with looks in mind rather than any real acoustic principles behind them. Yes, there were drive units like the KEF B139 that were flat panel radiators with some real design thought behind them but these don't look to be in the same league.
