Neve 8801 - is it exactly the same as the 88R console channel strips?

Post by JamesRussell »

Hi all,

I’m going to be tracking a record at a large studio in London, UK which has a Neve 88R console. Typically, when I’m engineering records like this, I like to run all the mics through the console preamps/EQs etc for the great sense of glue that it provides. For this project, we’re going to have to do overdubs (guitars, synths, vocals etc) in other studios so I am wondering if the Neve 8801 channel strip is built (as Neve claims) in exactly the same way as a channel from the console, and will therefore layer up with the same glued effect I would normally like about tracking projects in the same studio through the same console.

I wondered if anyone here had any experience that may help me!

Many thanks,
James Russell

It's obviously not exactly the same. There's no mix bus, and you'll be going through an extra A-D stage.

But all the core sections are essentially the same — preamp, eq, dynamics etc — so its definitely as close to the innate character as you're going to get.

I have the channel strip and its good but complicated to operate well. Ie many buttons have multiple functions , like some rotary dials that turn but also press in. Check out Alec Brits youtube video on it.

That said i like the sound of the Neve 1073 SPX D better.
