Krackle Killers

Post by Hugh Robjohns »

Just wanted to give a shout-out for Krackle-Killers, as reviewed here:

https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/krackle-killers

One of those little-known products which can be a real boon when it comes to less-than perfect jack sockets, and which deserves recommendation.

I had some unwelcome crackles from a couple of sockets in a used DI rack box found on ebay. A couple of goes with a krackle killer and some deoxit has cured the problems completely.

Available directly from the inventor in Australia:

Definitely worth keeping a bag or two in your musicians toolkit, alongside the can of deoxit, pliers, screwdrivers, and spare strings!

I have no affiliation with the product other than as an appreciative user.

Thanks for the reminder Hugh - VERY useful, and obviously very effective! 8-)

While discussing 'socket maintenance' I suspect your post is also a suitable place to remind everyone about JackCaps, which I know you and I routinely use to prevent dust getting into unoccupied sockets, not only 6.35mm and 3.5mm jacks, but also XLRs and MIDI.

At 35p to 70p each in the UK, they are also an absolute bargain!

Good call. Yes, I'm a big fan of them too.

If you put them on your Rice Krispies, do you only then get 'snap' and 'pop'?

Reliably fallible.

3.5 jacks? I'd need about two thousand quids worth in my studio!

How cute!
And all this time I've been re-purposing my old used dental brushes ("Piksters") and dunking them in Deoxit to achieve the same effect...

Yes, I can understand that, especially with your love of Eurorack ;)

Personally I'm thankful to have JackCaps in all my horizontally mounted 6.35mm jack sockets (mixing desks and so on), as these are prime targets for falling dust.

I also have them in unoccupied sockets on my keyboards/synths - plenty of musicians who play live find them invaluable on stage for this purpose, as it makes it so much easier in the dark to find the main L/R outputs when some keyboards have a dozen or so sockets on their back panels!

Looks like a prime candidate for 3D printing to me - a perfectly good 3D printer and a 1kg roll of filament costs around £150.

is the first design that I found but there are lots of alternatives.
