KEF IQ3 Speaker Repair

Post by omereilam »

Hello everyone,

I have a pair of KEF IQ3 Speakers and lately one of them was damaged because of feedback.
I would like to try to repair it but I don't have much experience in the field so I was hoping to get some help from the people here.
Ideally I would be able to find the necessary spare parts and go to a local repair cafe where they could help me with the repair.
I made a short recording comparing the damaged speaker with the healthy one. You can listen to it here: https://on.soundcloud.com/vgbCtXLFLMWFheoE7. I can imagine that the problem is with the cone.

Thank you for your help,
Omer

Welcome to the SOS forum

I would suggest that your first step would be to contact KEF direct and see if they can help you with the spares.

Manufacturers can often be very helpful.

Fingers crossed on that though because the drivers are unusual, coaxial full range units, so unlike more conventional speakers where it's often the tweeter that gets blown and you can purchase just a replacement diaphragm, these are going to have to be replaced as an entire unit. Still, you never know. I recall owning a Teac A3340s four track reel to reel tapedeck which was already 15 years old probably when I purchased it. It needed a new capstan roller and vu meter lamp and to my astonishment Teac still had spares for it. So you never know....

I’ve seen a used pair for £150, so replacement may be the most cost-effective option.

And that's too much, I'd expect to see these going for under £100, if you like the sound fine, but they aren’t that spectacular in the grand scheme of things, either look for another pair, or get something else, there are many bargains out there. I bought a nice pair of Monitor Audio MA5’s for £60, from a junk shop, perfect working order, and a pair of Mordaunt Short's for £20, both good solid speakers.
Tannoy aren’t revered for a lot of this type of stuff, they got their reputation from the older dual concentric designs, which are still highly desirable, the newer stuff has nothing to do with any of this really, the company name is owned by Music Tribe now, a lot made in china, although I think the classic Tannoy Reissues are still made in the UK.
I couldn’t open that link, I’d like to know exactly what you’re hearing.

Hi omereilam, really sorry to hear about your speaker trouble feedback-related damage can be frustrating, especially with something as well-regarded as the KEF iQ3. That said, it's great that you're looking into repair rather than replacing it outright. In many cases, it’s either the tweeter or crossover that takes the hit, so those are good places to start checking. KEF’s support team or forums like DIYAudio are excellent for getting specific guidance and sourcing the right parts. And honestly, taking it to a repair café is a brilliant idea hands-on help can make a big difference. Wishing you the best with the fix do share how it goes!

Oh dear, I obviously haven't spent enough time studying AI creations.
'twas me that let this post through, and I now hang my head in shame :smirk:

I can now spot the regurgitated format - shall we leave it here for a day or two to see what (if anything) happens next, or shall I just drop it into the mineshaft of eternal darkness? :?

The member has definitely not left the building*, where 'not' means 'now'

* For reasons other than the AI-like post quoted above
