Has the magazine ever covered this? I now have a laptop for my son and would like to make it as "lean and mean" as possible but don't want to screw anything.
I know my way around W7 and am fairly good with 10 but I am struggling to find FA! in 11.
I did Google the subject extensively but could find nothing SoS related.

Optimizations for win 11

Re: Optimizations for win 11
Best upgrade to Win11? upgrade to Win10
Actually, Win11 isn't that bad, and there is the Win Debloater software on the internet which really does scrape Win11 of the claptrap and bric-a-brac it comes festooned with. Windows is becoming ever more intrusive and demands you have an MS account, though there are workarounds where you can sign in with a local account and now on my music machine, I get no adverts, pap-ups and nagging.
"Don't try this at home folks" Any such changes eg using DeBloater should only be done when and after you've done a System Restore and a drive image, back up, make sure important data is invulnerable.
BTW - a little side note. I use Firefox browser, the 'portable' version which I have on a separate data drive, out of the reqach of Windows, so I thought.
It turns out that Firefox, in common with other apps, keeps data in c:\users\roaming(and local)\Appdata\Firefox so even though I thought I had Firefox ringfenced, the bookmarks, history, form data etc were in Windows
When making profound changes, I back-up the AppData folder. Another advantage of that, with Cubase for example, if I lose settings, preferences etc I can restore them from my backup of AppData

Thanks Indigo2 but I really only want something from an SoS bod such as Martin Walker because I am such a PC numpty I don't want to risk buggering the laptop*.
You are NOT helping my nerves One! How does W11 behave if you defeat internet access when running just a DAW and interface for instance? (can try it of course) I have a 1TB USB drive coming today and so will setup File History and make a system image (never had to use one in anger mind!). I am also trying to make an OS recovery USB stick but not worked so far.
I shall not activate One Drive, can I just uninstall it?
*I did, with the aid of "Dummies" reset the first Dell to factory spec and (hopefully!) that deleted all my details.

In my experience, you don't really need to do anything. My recent laptop came with a standard Win11 installation and has worked fine for audio with no tweaking.
I think you are worrying too much. Just set up the applications that you want to use and then send it out to your son.

Thank you James I shall do that. It won't get "sent out" though! I lose about 2% of the stuff I post to him a year. Last thing was a 20 quid foot switch for a Peavey 112. Not that fussed about a score but the idea of shipping over £400 worth of laptop and sundries with a big, FO label on it advertising the contents and their value is the height of lunacy to me!
No, if he gets back for his dad's 80th he can take it with him or we have a mutual friend who visits him now and then.

Who said anything about de-activating the internet? did you not see the
If your nerves get frazzled over a computer you might be better taking up something like belly dancing or tiddley winks
In such event, I always invoke the family motto - Quodcumque sit problema, ad finem diei, aut reparabitur aut frangetur. <-- substitute common Anglo-Saxon profanity here
